MONDAY MEMO
2nd graders Mabel, Max, and Bryn accessed different texts at their individual levels today during reading time, including using dictionaries to look up unknown words.
Hello {First Name},

So many culminating spring activities and plans for next year are already in the works, read on to be sure you're aware and choosing where to take part in supporting Riverside!

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
TRIMESTER REPORTS
Teachers spent the weekend finalizing their trimester reports about students and those will be sent home this week. Please be sure to review them carefully, choose some strengths or weaknesses to review with your child, and be in touch with any teachers if you have follow up questions. K-5th grade reports will be in boomerang folders tomorrow; 6-8th grade reports will be mailed home tomorrow (as these are summative, we don't want to risk them being lost in middle school cubbies or backpacks).
CONTACTING SCHOOL
When you need to communicate a short-notice update about your child's schedule or needs for the same day (like taking a medication, going to EDP, leaving for an appointment, or going home with a friend), please do so by calling the Riverside's landline (802-626-8552). Teachers try to not be distracted by their personal phones during the day, and parents often aren't aware that certain staff are home sick or working off campus, and individual text/email messages aren't always easily relayed. But we always try our best to answer the phone!

Regarding absence for the day, you can call, or email both Krystal and the teacher/advisor.
LION KING PHOTOS
Oops, some pictures we had from Act 1 were missing from the album last week, but have now been added, check them out!
REENROLLMENT CONTRACTS
The state is several weeks behind on releasing the announced average tuition. We cannot send out re-enrollment contracts for returning families until we know the state's average and have set our own tuition rates, so contracts will be late this year. We will have them in the mail as soon as the board votes on tuition rates for 2023-2024. Usually, we ask families to return their contracts within three weeks. Because of our lengthy waitlist of applicants, we will have to so shorten that timeline to two weeks, so that we can make the other admissions decisions. If you know already that you will or may not be enrolling your children next year, it would help us tremendously to know this now. Please email Roy and Krystal.
TEACHING CANDIDATES
Candidate lists for the middle school and 2nd grade teacher positions have shifted a bit since last week. Our schedule of visits for finalists is below. We do welcome parents to meet them on those dates at 2:15 in the dining room (Deandra's intervention space behind Krystal's office).

We intend to schedule this time for other candidates and parents as well on their visiting days:
  • Thursday, March 30: Alex Gratton (middle school)
  • Friday, March 31st: Beth Kerchner (2nd grade)
  • Monday, April 3rd: Will Albritton (middle school) and Carrie Albritton (2nd grade)
SCHOOL CHOICE LEGISLATION UPDATE
We need every Riverside family to help us voice our opposition to the new bill H.483 (new and different from the earlier combatted S.66/H.258), which is titled “An act relating to the accountability and oversight of approved independent schools that are eligible to receive public tuition,” and is scheduled for a house vote on Wednesday. This bill was rushed through committee without time to hear from enough constituents or address their concerns. As written, it would have a major detrimental impact on our school’s ability to operate as planned next year in terms of enrollment and budget planning. If this bill passes in the House, it goes to the Senate, and we would like to stop that from happening. A one-sentence email to your representatives (you can find them here), simply stating your opposition to the bill, will suffice at this time. Independent schools around the state are voicing their opposition to this bill, and we believe that short emails stating simply something like “I am writing to state my opposition to H.483 and ask you to vote against it” will be effective.

If you have more time or passion:
  • Emails to every House member would also be appreciated. Copy/pasting this list of email addresses into your BCC field with a salutation of just "Dear Vermont Representative" is fine.
  • If you'd like to understand and further explain the specific arguments, they are listed here.
K-2nd gr. SWIMMING
Please remember to pick up K-2nd graders at the back door of the SJA pool at 3:30 this Thursday, and again on April 6, 13, 20, May 4, and 11.

If you have to pick up a middle school student at Riverside as well, siblings can stay in the EDP at no charge until 3:45.
RIVERSIDE SUPER RAFFLE
Planning is underway for our biggest parent-led fundraiser of the year. The super-raffle is fun and lucrative, and will take place on Saturday, May 13. Two things to know now:
  1. We ask each family to sell three $50 tickets, with specific assigned numbers on them. They went home with students last week according to a master list of families and ticket numbers. Elementary parents will find them in boomerang folders, middle school parents will have to ask their child for them, please be sure they're not left/lost in cubbies! After finding a buyer, please return the portion of the ticket with their name and phone number on it, which we will use for the drawing. If you can't sell them, it's essential that you return the whole ticket!
  2. Parents who have talents, business, or connections, please consider donating an item or service as a raffle prize.
2nd ANNUAL RIVERSIDE AGAINST CANCER RECESS RELAY
We will have our first planning and organization meeting for this year's Recess Relay on Thursday of this week, March 30th, starting at 3:30 in Allee's room at Riverside. We would welcome any and all who would like to be involved in the planning of this important event. If you can't make it on Thursday, but still want to help out and are willing to volunteer on the day of the event, please contact Caroline. Stay tuned to this section of the Monday Memo for more details as plans begin to develop.
CLUBS THIS WEEK AND NEXT:
  • 6-8 Mathcounts Club will not meet today. The next Mathcounts meeting will be on April 3rd when we will have a watch party for some of the Semifinalists in the Video Challenge. This will be our last Mathcounts meeting of this year. On behalf of all the students in the Mathcounts club, we would like to thank Cecelia and Alex Garvin (Julian and Beatrice 7th grade) and all parents who have generously donated snacks to the Mathcounts Monday afternoons. Thank you for your support.
  • 6-8 Hip Hop Club will meet this Tuesday from 3:45-4:30 for the last time.
  • 3-5 Coding Club will meet Wednesday from 3:00-4:00.
  • 6-8 STEM Club 6th, 7th and 8th grade STEM club members are working hard to prepare for their competition on April 6th in Manchester, NH. Congratulations to those of you who've already submitted your entries for early judging; In the Digital Photography competition, Moxie Stahler (8th), Kellan Bristol (7th) and Gabe Adams (7th) and in the Video Game Design competition, Ignacio Montague (7th) and Julian Garvin (7th). STEM club will be meeting this week, Wednesday, March 29th and next week, April 5th from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. We would also like to thank Joe Royer, Molly Moghari and Matthew Linehan for volunteering to be drivers and parent chaperones on April 6th and Joe Royer also for sharing his expertise and donating his time to help Mr. G and Caroline advise this group on Wednesdays after school.
  • 6-8 Latin Club will meet this Thursday from 3:45-4:30. The Latin club is going to a certamen at Dover HS in NH on April 8th. This will be a day trip, not a weekend trip as previously planned (because it is both Passover and Easter weekend). That means that this trip is primarily for people who are interested in competing at certamen- whether they want to be on a competitive team or they are interested in trying it out. We’ll be announcing this in class this week and need to know by Friday who is interested in going so we can arrange carpools (parent drivers needed) and register our teams.
  • 3-8 Chess Club will meet this Thursday from 3:30-5:00.
  • 6-8 Indoor Soccer Club will meet this Thursday from 3:30-5:00 and continue until warmer weather outdoors.

BURKLYN ARTS LOGO CONTEST
Burklyn Arts is a local non-profit organization that supports arts education in our schools and in the community, including art projects, music & art supplies, visiting artists, community events and more. They fund these projects largely through revenue from two major annual craft fairs. Their funding has supported numerous elements of Riverside's program, including seeing professional performances, hosting guest artists in our classes, and supporting our play productions. Burklyn is asking for submissions for a new logo design! Submissions are due by March 31. For more information about how to enter, read here.
