Strategic Plan

Since September 2021, the UMB Office of Sustainability has been drafting, revising, and collecting feedback from various stakeholder groups on campus to outline a set of deliberate and aggressive strategic plan goals.

The goals are now listed on the sustainability website. The strategic plan is a living document and will be updated as needed to reflect current legislative requirements to achieve carbon neutrality and a sustainable future for all.
Working Groups

We've created working groups to gather feedback for achieving the goals in our strategic plan. Each working group has a specific focus area. We have over 48 representatives on the 4 working groups: Reduction, Resilience, Engagement and Education, and Green Labs. Working group membership represents students, staff, and faculty.

The first meetings were held in January and February, with each group getting to know one another, reviewing the strategic plan goals, and determining next steps.
LED Lighting Upgrade Project Progress

To reduce our energy consumption across campus, we are replacing all fluorescent light bulbs with LED bulbs in each building. Once completed, this will reduce our electricity usage by 5.3 Million kWh. That's equivalent to planting 62,107 trees and letting them grow for 10 years!

The Operations & Maintenance teams have successfully converted the following3 buildings to 100% LED bulbs: Allied Health, Environmental Health and Safety, and Maryland Bar Center. They have installed approximately 50% of the LED bulbs in the Law/Social Work Building. Check out more project progress here.

Community Engagement Center (CEC) PAL Series

In collaboration with the CEC, Angela and Elizabeth created a sustainable crafting program for the children who attend the Police Athletic League program after school.

Over three sessions, they created reusable bags out of old UMB shirts, a collage out of recycled newspapers and magazines, and a succulent planter from water bottles.
