The National Academies seeks to fill New Position overseeing development of Animal Nutrient Requirements
The National Academies seeks a Program Officer to oversee the development and periodic update of reports in The Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals Series, considered the “gold standard” for animal nutritionists in the United States and worldwide. Feed producers, ingredients makers, and the swine, fish, beef, dairy, small ruminant, poultry, companion animal, and horse industries rely on the Nutrient Requirements reports and models as fundamental reference texts, as do zoo and wildlife organizations, veterinarians, pet owners, and government regulatory agencies. The reports are widely used in university animal science departments for teaching and research. The desired candidate will have a PhD in animal science (knowledge of animal nutrition a plus) and a keen awareness of the many factors affecting the animal production today, including environmental impacts of feeding programs, the effects of feed additives, novel ingredients, genetically-enhanced feeds and the implications of rapidly changing animal genetics for nutrient requirements. Click here for additional information and to apply.

ADSA-GSD Webinar:
Driving the dairy industry toward data-driven decision-making
Large volumes of data are collected across dairy food systems. Yet, collected data are hardly used to inform decision-making in a systematic and quantitative way. To facilitate use of data by industry, it is important to provide training to current and future industry professionals. This webinar will introduce topics including data management, analytics, and modeling, with examples relating to the dairy industry. Discussion will include how graduate students and professionals can pursue formal and informal education to improve their skills working with data.
Please join us Wednesday, April 6, at 3:00 p.m. EDT for the next ADSA Graduate Student Division webinar, "Driving the dairy industry toward data-driven decision-making," by Sarah I. Murphy from Cornell University.
Sarah I. Murphy is a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at Cornell University, working in Renata Ivanek's research group. Murphy has expertise in food microbiology, food industry operations, and data analytics and modeling, which she applies to her research on microbial food quality and safety in dairy and produce supply chains. After receiving a BS in biological chemistry from Bates College in 2014, Murphy worked in QA/QC at Darigold for two years. Murphy received a PhD in food science and technology from Cornell University in 2020, under the primary guidance of Martin Wiedmann.
This webinar is open to all ADSA members. The hour-long webinar will include a live presentation followed by a live question-and-answer session. Click here to register.

ADSA joins in support of NWHC
ADSA joined 28 other organization in a letter to the chair and ranking member of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies urging inclusion of full funding in the FY23 Budget to complete modernization of the US Geological Survey (USGS) National Wildlife Health Center (NWHC) located in Madison, WI. The NWHC is the nation’s only federal BSL-3 facility exclusively dedicated to scientific investigation and research on wildlife diseases that threaten human, animal, and environmental health. Through a comprehensive program involving biomedical and ecological expertise and capabilities, the NWHC is a world leader in developing science-based solutions to some of the most deadly wildlife diseases including avian influenza, white nose syndrome of bats, and other emerging diseases that have devastated wildlife populations around the world and pose significant threats to our food supply and public health. You can view the letter and other coalition letters in the Advocacy area of the ADSA website.

Be a Part of the Discussion: Join us for the 42nd Discover Conference - Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding
The 42nd Discover Conference- Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding will include virtual options. It will be held April 19-21, 2022 at Northern Illinois University Naperville Conference Center Hosted by the American Dairy Science Association®.
Conference Objective: Genetic diversity drives our ability to increase profitability through selection, shift selection objectives to meet new market demands, and adapt to new environments. For the past 50 years combined breeding entities have successfully made U.S. genetics globally preeminent -- increasing food security and providing marketing opportunities for U.S. breeders. With a range of new selection tools and methods to employ this is an opportune time to pause, reflect and plan how genetic diversity and inbreeding might be managed in such a way that further advances U.S. genetics for the greater good. Led by the USDA National Animal Germplasm Program, this Discover Conference is one part of a comprehensive approach to address the issue of genetic diversity. The goal of these activities is to promote a shift in how breeding, genetic improvement and genetic diversity are viewed and used in an intensive agricultural sector found in countries like the United States. Discover 42 participants, and in particular graduate students, are encouraged to submit a short abstract that describes new and innovative research findings relating to the conference program:.
Conference Topics
The call for poster abstracts is now open from the DC42 web site. “Quality Standards for Abstracts” and an “Abstract template” are there as well. Deadline to submit a title and brief abstract is 11:59 PM CDT on March 1, 2022. Abstract presentations are limited to in-person attendees and will take place in poster format on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 in Naperville, Illinois.
Who should attend: Various stakeholders in the breeding industry including breed associations, companies selling dairy and livestock genetics, companies developing and selling genomic technology, university scientists, and government agencies are all encouraged to participate. We want to extend a special invitation to dairy producers and breeders to attend this conference to lend their unique insights to the discussion. Graduate students and early career professionals are especially encouraged to attend.
The Early Registration Deadline is March 18, 2022. Registration fees increase by $100 after March 18. Click here for additional information.
