"One of the Greatest Gifts you can Give is Your Time"
Volunteers:
The Heartbeat of Lake Lure Classical Academy
By Dr. Genie Phipps,
K-4 Assistant Principal
At the beginning of the school year, our staff received shirts with the following quote from Helen Keller, "Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”  In countless ways, this has been the theme throughout our school year. And it culminates on Tuesday, April 26th at 8:30 am when we will celebrate the many volunteers who do so much of the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting at our school.
These individuals have had such a tremendous impact on our students: Chimney Rock and Chimney Rock State Park, Hickory Nut Gorge Foundation, Hickory Nut Gorge Outreach, Lake Lure Classical PTO, Fairfield Mountains Chapel, Lake Lure Baptist Church, the Town of Lake Lure, the Lake Lure Police Department, Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, Mentoring 4 Medicine, Career Speakers, Dr. Ken Welty and countless others. These volunteers are impacting the lives of our students by working TOGETHER and improving our school with their selfless service. As you are out and about in the community this week, please be sure to thank them for what they mean to the students, families, and staff of Lake Lure Classical Academy.

Third Grade Music Teacher, Peggy Hill
Now completing her third year, Peggy Hill is the elementary music teacher at LLCA. Prior to her tenure with the Raptors, Mrs. Hill taught in Florida for 40 years. Asked what she most loves about teaching at LLCA she said, “The kids are always excited about music and the families are so supportive of the arts.”
Her favorite thing to do is to encourage students to be a part of a presentation because this builds their confidence.
Her piece of advice for our students: “Don’t be afraid to try things deep in your heart that you want to try.”
What are the students learning about these days in Mrs. Hill's Class?
Mrs. Hill recently worked with 5th graders to perform a musical titled, Incredible Westward Movement on Thursday, April 21st in the Raptor gymnatorium. The musical was a culmination of the Core Knowledge unit Westward Expansion. The musical took the audience through the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis & Clark, Oregon Trail, California Gold Rush, Prairie Schooners, sodbusters, and the transcontinental railroads. Parents, grandparents, and friends filled the Raptor Center to enjoy this wonderful performance.
Celebrating Earth Day at Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park
Our Earth Day celebration was held on Tuesday, April 19th.  Chimney Rock State Park provided information and activities for K-5 Earth Day.
Stations included Arboreal Animals, Reasons to Recycle, Tree Art, and much more! Special thanks to their continued partnership with our school. We also had several parent volunteers who helped with our students.
Morse Park Field Trip
Mrs. Sias for organizing our 7th-grade field trip to Morse Park. Our 7th Graders had a blast visiting beautiful Morse Park in Lake Lure this past week. Thanks to Mrs. Sias for planning this trip.
Shout out to One VERY Supportive Group of LLCA
We are deeply thankful to Fairfields Mountain Chapel for providing a $10,000 scholarship to one of our Raptor seniors. Members of the scholarship committee were at LLCA this week to interview those seniors who applied, and the winner will be announced soon.
Over the years, this local congregation has been very supportive of Lake Lure Classical Academy
In addition to this generous scholarship fund, members of the Chapel frequently tutor and mentor at LLCA.
They have also provided lunches for the faculty and staff. For the difference that they are making in the lives of young people and for all of the contributions of their time, talents, and treasures, our LLCA community is most thankful!
Teacher Luncheon:
Our next teacher luncheon is Thursday, May 5th in celebration of Cinco de Mayo! If you can volunteer to help serve food or with setup/cleanup, please contact pto@llcharter.org
