Sunapee Happenings

“Coming attraction”.

“You can cut all the flowers,

but you cannot stop spring from coming.”

Pablo Neruda

We’re just barely into spring, which in this neck of the woods, means we are rapidly approaching our "5th season”... MUD! This being the time of year when a great deal of New Hampshire will be wetlands for a month or so.  Hope is on the horizon… we're on schedule for the days to grow longer and warmer, albeit a setback in the temperature department… and somewhere  under the frozen snowbanks, surely daffodils are eager to burst forth!

SUNAPEE SPOTLIGHT

To the wonderful and amazing Abbott Library Community:

On March 16th, the Abbott Library Board of Trustees accepted my letter of resignation because I have accepted the position of Assistant State Librarian for New Hampshire. My last day working at Abbott Library will be April 20th.

In the more than six years I have been the director, I have been blessed to work with some amazing boards. From the Trustees, to the Friends, to the Foundation, we have so many incredibly talented, passionate and dedicated people who give of their time and energy simply to make the Abbott Library better. It’s also been a blessing to work with so many outstanding employees in other town departments through the years, especially my follow department heads.

Most of all, I will miss this library staff. You all know as well as I do how friendly, competent, hard-working and kind they all are. They are the heart and soul of the Abbott Library and I know you will continue to value and support them as you have always done.

I’ve always believed that my job as the director of the Abbott Library was to be a caretaker— to do the best work I could, for as long as the job was mine. I have been so very fortunate to have the opportunity to give my best to the library that raised me and fortunate to learn so much in the process. Your next director is going to have different ideas and skills that will take the library in a wonderful new direction.

A friend and colleague of mine says, “The goal in these kinds of jobs is to leave the wood stacked a little higher than when you came.” My greatest hope is that I’ve left the wood stacked a little higher for this library community. It’s been a ride, my friends. And one I am deeply grateful for. Please take good care and stay in touch.

All my best, Mindy

Abbott Library Director

4/13 - 15: Le Patin Libre at the HOP

Like the starlings' mind-blowing aerials, Murmuration exceeds what an individual brain can imagine or comprehend. The choreography was devised from complex algorithms, made possible by the speed and fluidity of ice. Micro-movements and changes of direction create a domino effect that deflect the trajectory of the group. Everyone is constantly on the lookout, as they explore the dynamic interactions of an exhilarating and sometimes dangerous togetherness. An adrenaline rush for the whole family! Learn More

4/13: Speaker @ The Fells. “The Newbury Cut”

John Lyons, a member of the Newbury Historical Society, will present a slide show about the challenge of extending the Concord to Claremont Railroad from Bradford to Newbury. The Bradford Depot was the last Concord stop from 1850 to 1870 while the Newbury Cut was being blasted. The climb of 100 feet per mile is almost impossible for a train. Ten thousand cubic feet of granite rock at the Newbury Summit barred the way for 20 years until 1870. Learn about how the impossible became only difficult, and eased John Hay’s trip from Washington D.C. to the Fells. Members: free, nonmembers $10 per person. Meets at the Gatehouse. Please register in advance as space is limited by calling our office at 603-763-4789 x3 or by email info@thefells.org.  Learn More

SUNAPEE TRIVIA (follow up)

Photo of Bridge Plaque awarded to Project Sunapee in recognition of their efforts to build the Sugar River Covered Bridge, fulfilling

a primary directive of the 1985 Town Master Plan. The bridge was designed by Brent Stocker, constructed by Western Wood Structures in Oregon, deconstructed and shipped across country to Sunapee where it was rebuilt on site by local contractors under the direction of Stockerwoodworks. Most remarkably, every hour of local labor and every dollar was donated! The bridge has since been gifted to the Town by Project Sunapee.  There will be a special event commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the dedication of the bridge later this summer.

Previous trivia answer correction: There are three towns with the same name at their counties including Hillsborough, Strafford and Grafton.

CELEBRATIONS

Easter and Passover will soon be commemorated by religious services or a certain Rabbit hiding colorful eggs and candies.
