FCMaP 2022 Annual Summit

Report


The Florida Coastal Mapping Program Annual Summit was held on 30 November and 1 December 2022 at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. The primary purpose of the FCMaP Summit was to bring together stakeholders to present updates to mapping frameworks, annual reports on mapping activities, and discuss future plans and strategies to achieve a mapped Florida.

Meet our New FCMaP Program Coordinator


Kristie Erickson is joining FIO / FCMaP from Manatee County, where she was the Marine Resources Coordinator, in charge of the artificial reefs program, including sidescan sonar surveys for/of the reef sites and GIS product creation. She has previously worked for NOAA SEFSC and FWRI, where she worked with diverse stakeholders for informational meetings, consensus-building, as well as data collection and sharing. Click below to check out her biography!

Annual All Hands Meeting 


The Florida RESTORE Act Centers of Excellence Program (CoE) is the CoE Research Grant Program for Florida and is hosted by FIO. There are eight active projects and another $2 million in funding is to be awarded in spring 2023 to establish 3 CoE focused on restoration impacts. The annual All Hands Meeting was held in January 2023 and provided an opportunity for the currently funded scientists to present updates on the research currently being conducted as well an opportunity to discuss future research needs.

2023 Gulf Coast!


Ocean mapping sessions will be included with a strong focusing on collaboration of governments, international organizations, universities, non-governmental organizations, maritime industries, and citizens - to support mapping initiatives by:


  • Consolidating and sharing pre-existing data
  • Leveraging existing and emerging technologies to collect and disseminate bathymetric data
  • Planning cruises to previously unmapped regions
  • Helping to building a strong global community united in purpose

Open Science

Tampa Bay Estuary Program


Dr. Chris Anastasiou and Dr. Marcus Beck provide an in depth understanding of the fundamentals of open science and how they can be applied within an organization to create reproducible, transparent, and actionable research products. FCMaP strives to excel in open science in an effort to coordinate and collaborate with Gulf and U.S. East Coast state, regional and federal partners to create a centralized location for Florida seafloor mapping.
