Susanville PD Reminds Travelers to
Buckle Up This Memorial Day Weekend
For Memorial Day Weekend, the Susanville Police Department reminds travelers to always buckle up and secure children in the right car seats when visiting friends and family.
This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign runs from May 20th to June 2nd. During this time, the SPD will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt. This includes vehicles where children are not secured in child safety seats or the right safety seats for their age.
| |
|
Wearing a seat belt should be automatic for all drivers and passengers every trip according to the department, seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember always to buckle up.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 12,000 people killed in crashes throughout the country in 2021 were not wearing seat belts. In California, 878 people killed in crashes in 2021 were not wearing seat belts, an increase of 12.3 percent from 2020.
California law requires a child to be secured in a safety or booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall.

Susanville Fire Department Sets
June 24th as Weed Abatement Deadline
The Susanville Fire Department is reminding city residents that the Weed Abatement deadline is next Monday, June 24th, 2024 for removal of weeds and fire hazards.
“We are asking that all hazards be mitigated before the deadline,” explains Assistant Fire Chief Tom Hernandez. “The following Weed Abatement Standards are designed to assist firefighting efforts by, prevention of, or slowing the spread of fire.”
According to Hernandez the Susanville Fire Department has the final decision in determining whether an area is ‘safe from the spread of fire’ and conforms to the intent of the code.

|
The applicable City Code Section, 8.28.030, says that, “It is unlawful for the owner, agent, lessee or other person having charge or control of any piece or parcel of land within the city to allow weeds or rubbish to grow, or to remain thereon, or upon the street or sidewalk in front of such piece or parcel of land.”
Weeds, grass, or other combustible growth may be abated by mowing, disking, or scraping. If mowed the combustible growth must be cut and maintained to a maximum height of 4 inches.
All hazards must be mitigated prior to the June 26th, deadline and abatement by open burning is not permitted.
Guidelines for removal of hazards on all properties within the city:
- Mow or disk space around all buildings 30 feet wide at minimum.
- Mow or disk space 50 ft. wide minimum completely around the perimeter of the property to the street or sidewalk. Mow or disk 30 ft. wide minimum cross-breaks every 50 ft. maximum, (property can be completely mowed or disked in lieu of cross-breaks.)
- Mow or disk space extending 30 ft. minimum beyond the foliage of any group of trees.
- All rubbish, trash, trimmings, rubble or litter shall be removed from the property.
- All woods, fuel, or lumber shall be neatly stacked or removed from the property.
- All weeds, grass, or other combustible growth shall be cleared at least 10 ft. from around any combustible storage.
- Greenbelt, pastures, and environmentally-sensitive areas shall be assessed on an individual basis. Contact the fire department if you believe that this applies to your property.
- Mow or disk space may be required to be larger if a potential fire hazard exists.
- Remove down branches from trees and trim lower branches up to 6 ft. from the ground or 1/3 the height for smaller trees.
For more information regarding the Susanville Weed Abatement Program please contact Assistant Chief Tom Hernandez at 530-257-5152.

Uptown Susanville around 1901 ~Lassen Historical Society~ | |
A Nice Place to Go
May 23, 1883
The Susanville excursion came back last evening at 5 o’clock, after a delightful trip. Everybody was as hospitable as could be.
The Susanville people did everything possible for their comfort and pleasure. They say Reno people make more noise on less liquor than anybody they ever saw.
A special vote of thanks was made to Henry Bereman, who carried them in his carriage to several interesting places, and who entertained them in his pleasant rooms in a handsome manner.
The Masonic bodies in Susanville are in a flourishing condition, and have both the ability and the inclination to receive visitors in a credible way.
There is an interest manifested in the order there that is quite refreshing compared with that shown in Reno, where apathy prevails that is allowing the younger societies to gather in the best material among the young men of the country.
The Susanville Chapter has $3,500 at interest and the Lodge and Commandery are both nicely fixed. The latter has 79 names of men who are a credit to the order of knighthood.
