Clements Library Resources:

The William L. Clements Library holds few handwritten items pertinent to James Ogilvie, though they are compelling. Two of these are digitized as part of our Samuel Latham Mitchill Papers, including letters to Catharine Mitchill from her sister Margaret Miller, December 1808 and January 1809, on reactions to Ogilvie's presence in New York City, his appearance and demeanor, and his drug use. See digital surrogates of the letters, with transcriptions:

  • January 15, 1809 letter [link]

"I am sensible of your goodness my dear Kitty, in not waiting for a formal answer from me, to each of your agreeable epistles," Margaret Miller ALS writes to Catharine Mitchill, December 18, 1808.

The late professor of speech Dr. Duane Norman Diedrich and the late linguist Dr. David P. Harris generously donated manuscripts related to many aspects of speech, including childhood and higher education, theory, practice, experiences of everyday and public delivery, high profile popular and political orations, and planned speaking event cancellations. A few examples include:

From the Dr. Duane Norman Diedrich Collection:

  • James B. Pond Papers, 1863-ca. 1940s [link]
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt manuscript notes in George Riddle's A Modern Reader and Speaker, 1901-1902 [link]
  • Winston Churchill Collection, 1889-1965 [link]

Picturing Michigan's Past
The Clements Library invites you to participate in our volunteer project, Picturing Michigan’s Past, to describe the David V. Tinder real-photo postcard collection. Consisting of over 60,000 postcards, the Tinder collection paints a detailed portrait of everyday life in Michigan in the early 20th century.

Volunteers are asked to view the postcards remotely through Zooniverse, the world’s largest website for people-powered research, and identify key information, like title, subject, and date, that will bring the collection to life.
