A First-Person portrayal by Leslie Goddard

Monday, February 13

7:00 - 8:00 pm

Zoom Only!

Leslie Goddard is an award-winning actress and scholar who has been presenting history programs for more than fifteen years. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University specializing in American studies and U.S. history as well as a master’s degree in theater.

Leslie portrays memorable women from the past and tells historical stories so that lessons from the past are more entertaining and educational.

In this new historical portrayal, historian Leslie Goddard, Ph.D., explores the life of Britain’s famous monarch, from her childhood, the abdication of her uncle, her marriage to a navy officer named Philip, her World War II service, and her struggle to balance her roles as queen and mother. Get to know the woman behind the images, her sense of humor and savvy intelligence with which she meets her demanding obligations.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.

March Program

Thursday, March 30

7:00 - 8:00 pm

Woodridge Public Library

The Additional Edition of “The A-List of Absolutely Admirable Local Ladies” will be presented by branch members. This program will be both educational and entertaining!

Share what you would like people to know about you; don’t assume everyone already knows everything there is to know. A couple of paragraphs of highlights would be good. You may cover things like your education, career, marriage and family, volunteer work, awards, hobbies, talents like singing or drawing, interests such as travel or collecting statues of gnomes. You get the idea.

Please share your writeup with Joyce Tumea by February 15, so she will have enough time to review and compile the information.

Any woman in Downers Grove or nearby communities are invited to share their info, too.

Portillo’s February Fundraiser!

Whether your favorite is the Chicago style hot dog, Italian Beef, or a Chopped Salad, support our branch by enjoying Portillo’s at the Downers Grove location (1500 Butterfield Road) on February 15th from 5 – 8 p.m.

Portillo’s will donate 20% of each order using the code “Portillos7”, whether eat-in, drive through, pickup or curbside. You must use the code for the branch to get credit. Present it to the first person you talk to at drive-through, to the cashier when you order in the restaurant, or online if you place your order that way.

Share the flyer with your family and friends and enjoy Portillo’s delicious menu while the branch earns funds.

Thank you for your support of our fundraisers!

Be Involved in the Community

Over the past few months, our community has seen challenges to intellectual freedom:  banning of books in schools and libraries, or pressure on programming that deals with uncomfortable topics. What can we as individuals and groups do to counter these challenges?

Here are some ideas:

1. The National AAUW website has a page named “Take Action." www.aauw.org/act/national

This page offers information and action items that support the AAUW mission of advancing gender equity and creating a more economically secure world for women and girls.  You can sign up for Action Alerts, Newsletters and even learn how to become a Two-Minute Activist. Explore this page to learn how you might want to actively support your own causes and goals.

2. Attend local school board and library board meetings. Sometimes the most extreme voices are the only ones heard. Simply by attending these meetings, you are demonstrating strength in numbers. Many meetings provide an opportunity for public comment if you choose to speak. You can find dates and locations for these meetings by Googling the school districts and libraries where you live. Gather your friends and attend as a group.

3. Local elections are coming up – make sure you know about the candidates. Vote411.org is a site compiled by the League of Women Voters to be sure that voters have the information they need to successfully participate in every election, including municipal elections coming up on April 4, 2023.

What Makes You Smile?

A smile can come on its own. The sun peaks out of the clouds. A favorite melody comes on the radio. A familiar face or voice surprises you at the store. You can’t experience too many smiles. This time of year especially we should actively seek them out and spread them to others. Avoid “earning” something you enjoy. Those thank you notes will get done whether you go to a movie before writing them or after. You will write a better note with a smile on your face.

I’ve put the dessert first! I want you to make some telephone calls. Are you up to date with your health checkups – not just medical, but dentist and eye doctor too? Call and make appointments. Make lists of your questions to take to the appointments. Consult with your doctor about vaccinations, and protect yourself against flu, COVID, shingles, and pneumonia. By protecting yourself, you will help protect others too. Just do it. It isn’t that hard.

Now I’ll come back to smiles. They are an important part of health. What makes you smile? Just now there are three birds on my bird feeder. How lovely! Please do something today that makes you smile – buy flowers; listen to music; call someone just to say hello. And don’t force yourself to earn it first.
