Louisiana Legislature Approves New Orleans-Baton Rouge Passenger Rail Funding, Support for Atlanta-Dallas Service Through Monroe & Shreveport


On Friday, June 3rd, the Louisiana House of Representatives voted favorably to advance Senate Bill 467, authored by Senator Gary Carter, Jr., and co-sponsored by Representative Michael Echols and dozens more co-sponsors, to the Governor’s desk. The bill mandates that the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DoTD) prepare the scope, schedule and budget for the Baton Rouge to New Orleans intercity passenger rail and North Louisiana I 20 corridor long distance passenger rail. Subsequently, the DoTD must return prior to the 2023 legislative session with reports and updates on their progress, in order to ensure initiation of service as soon as possible. Learn more here. 

Tucson Public Transit to Remain Fare-Free


When the coronavirus pandemic was raging two years ago, Tucson's Sun Tran followed the lead of other cities by eliminating transit fares. Besides encouraging people to ride, it reduced interaction between drivers and passengers, who could board at the back of the bus, to maintain social distancing. Recently, the Mayor and Council continued the policy through the end of this year, over the objections of the Teamsters union that claimed city buses have turned into rolling shelters for people experiencing homelessness. Read more here.

Baker (La.) Residents to Enjoy New Micro-transit Rideshare Option


A new rideshare option is coming to Baker, bringing the community to key locations in the community. CATS has introduced LYNX, a five fleet van service that can be ordered through their app or by phone at 225-267-9080. Each van is ADA compliant, to make the rideshare an option for all citizens of the community. Learn more.

Beaumont Transit Receives New Fleet of Buses with More Accessible Features


Thanks to federal and state funding, Beaumont Municipal Transit is now rolling out a new fleet of buses. The new buses are equipped with features making them more accessible to people, especially those with disabilities. Four of the new buses are already in service and picking up people at the downtown bus station. Read more here.

Skyrocketing Gas Prices Drive Public Transit Demand


The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was just north of $5, while bus and subway fares have by and large stayed the same. Nationwide, ridership is at 65% of pre-pandemic levels, a 40% increase from March 2020. Read more.
