GGUSD Celebrates College-Bound Seniors

GGUSD high schools are celebrating their college-bound seniors this month with festive College Signing Day events.


GGUSD is a leader in college readiness with 57.7% of GGUSD’s Class of 2021 meeting rigorous college entrance requirements qualifying students to attend UC or CSU schools, compared to 56.9% in Orange County and 52.1% across the state.


GGUSD students graduate high school prepared for the future. In 2021, GGUSD had an impressive 3,437 students take at least one Advanced Placement course and students took 6,673 Advanced Placement exams. Additionally, with a high success rate in dual enrollment courses, many GGUSD students graduate high school with a number of college credits already earned.

GGUSD Recognizes Achievements of Special Education Students

Our wonderful Community Advisory Committee for Special Education hosted a beautiful Student Recognition Awards event at the Garden Grove Community Center last week to celebrate the many accomplishments of our Special Education students. GGUSD has an outstanding Special Education program with caring staff who consistently foster student development and growth. Kudos to our awesome CAC parent volunteers who worked with our Special Education Department to plan this celebration

Board and District Leaders Show Support for Mental Health Awareness

At its meeting this week, GGUSD’s Board of Education, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents show their support for Mental Health Awareness Month by sporting green pins and bracelets provided by Trustee Walter Muneton who is also a professional social worker. GGUSD is committed to equipping students with both the academic and personal skills for lifelong success. Over the years, GGUSD has greatly increased mental health and wellness supports for students, staff and families with the launch of a Choose Wellness campaign in 2019, expansion of its ASPIRE program which provides direct mental health counseling to students, the addition of Wellness Centers at school sites, regular wellness workshops for families and staff, and a new mental-health based app rolled out with staff first and then students, to name a few!

At its meeting this week, GGUSD’s Board of Education honored the district's eight nominees for Orange County Classified Employee of the Year including Liz Stimmler, School Secretary at Rancho Alamitos High School; Michael Swindell, Equipment Operator II; Nancy Thurston, Food Services Lead at Walton Intermediate School; Trinidad Escobar, School Community Liaison at Garden Grove High School; Robin Foster, Instructional Aide II at Riverdale Elementary School; Joseph Mendoza, Painter I; John Huggett, Network Technician in Information Services; and Bus Driver Shannon Lauricella. Shannon was selected as one of nine employees to earn the state recognition as the 2022 California Classified School Employee of the Year and is one of two nominees for the Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) Award, a national honor which will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education in 2023. 


The Board also honored our 3 outstanding nominees for Orange County Department of Education's Teacher of the Year program including Rita Hanna Yost, Morningside Elementary; Hanh Tran, Post Elementary; and Chris Maroney, Walton Intermediate.

GGUSD High School Athletes Earn League Championships

Los Amigos’ baseball team are Garden Grove League Champions! This is their 1st baseball league title in school history! The Lobos enter playoffs with a 22-4 overall record & ranked #1 in @cifss division 7.

Garden Grove’s girls swimming team are Golden West League Champions. This is the girls program’s 17th league title.

Students and staff at Faylane Elementary School were in full Star Wars mode this week in celebration of May 4th!

Excelsior Students Help School Garden to Bloom

Excelsior Elementary School students participate in the school's Gardening Club for an outdoor science experience and to help care for the school's fresh produce!

Marshall Students Benefit from College and Career Mentoring Program

Marshall Elementary sixth graders participated in and completed the College and Career Mentoring program. Students were forunate to work with college mentors who attended Marshall while in elementary school and are now attending four-year universities.  The emphasis on AVID strategies and focus on college will prepae students for success in the future!
