Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction Updates
In February, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue
  • Started construction of the concrete curb along the Route 7 median between Reston Avenue and Baron Cameron Avenue.
  • Storm sewer installation west of Baron Cameron Avenue continued.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way
  • Continued panel installation for the noise barrier along westbound Route 7 between Colvin Run Road (east) and Colvin Run Road (west).
  • Started excavation for the northern half of the pedestrian underpass at Colvin Run Mill Park.  
  • Continued storm sewer installation for Stage 3A between Baron Cameron Avenue and Colvin Forest Drive.


  • Continued storm sewer installation for Stage 2A west of Baron Cameron Avenue.



  • Continued construction of foundations for the piers and western abutment of the eastbound Route 7 bridge over Difficult Run, including the completion of the drilled shaft installation for Pier 1 and the excavation for Pier 2.


  • Continued grading and began placement of cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt for Stage 3B between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.
  • Continued drilling for noise barrier foundations along eastbound Route 7 near Serenity Woods Lane.  
  • Started work on the 48" storm pipe crossing beneath Route 7 on the east side of McLean Bible Church.

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

2022 National Work Zone Awareness Week
National Work Zone Awareness Week is April 11-15, 2022. We appreciate the community's patience while we work to build the improvements along Route 7 and encourage drivers to slow down and be alert to the construction activities. Route 7 Corridor Improvements Virtual Construction Update
Join us on Tuesday, April 19 at 7 p.m. for a virtual update on the Route 7 Corridor Improvements and an overview of the two-phase opening of the new Lewinsville Road intersection, including a displaced left-turn from eastbound Route 7 to Lewinsville Road later this spring. In Case You Missed It
Construction activities along Route 7 will continue in 2022, and additional traffic shifts and temporary detours will occur along Route 7. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
