This initiative is intended to emphasize the importance of communities working collaboratively to support and serve children and their families in meaningful and impactful ways. Child abuse and neglect are preventable, and all communities benefit when children and families are well supported.
Throughout the month of April, dedicated child welfare serving agencies and professionals are called upon to work together on behalf of children and families to increase awareness about the prevention of child abuse and neglect, promote the safety and well-being of children, and share information about best practices to support families, build parental capacity, and increase resilience within families.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month is about more than just raising awareness of the realities of child maltreatment, it's also about taking informed action to support families and reduce abuse and neglect.
The CEBC Website is a critical tool for identifying, selecting, and implementing evidence-based child welfare practices that will improve child safety, increase permanency, increase family and community stability, and promote child and family well-being. This month, we invite you to learn about evidence-based programs on our website that target child and family well-being and supports, including the prevention or elimination of child abuse and/or neglect and the prevention of out-of-home placement for families in crisis:

View the latest edition of the annual Child Maltreatment report series, Child Maltreatment 2021, prepared by the Children’s Bureau at the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF). This report presents national data about child abuse and neglect known to child protective services agencies, and provided voluntarily by states via the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System.

It includes resources to assist in using the data, including a data user’s guide with description of the data, data collection protocols, codebooks, and links to other resources. The SCAN Policies Database now includes updated state statutes for the new 2021 data regarding child abuse and neglect definitions for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Medicaid and CHIP renewals are coming back! States will soon be required to restart Medicaid and CHIP eligibility reviews, which according to some estimates, could result in up to 15 million people losing their current coverage through a process called “unwinding.” In an effort to minimize the number of people that lose Medicaid or CHIP coverage, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is working with states and other stakeholders to inform people about renewing their coverage and exploring other available health insurance options if they no longer qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. Utilize the Medicaid and CHIP Continuous Enrollment Unwinding: A Communications Toolkit to help inform people about renewing their coverage and exploring other options.
