March 3, 2023

Ray-Pec Community,

There are seven parents in this community who have been elected to serve our students, staff, and the entire school district through complex challenges. I am speaking of our Raymore-Peculiar Board of Education.

March is School Board Recognition Month in Missouri, by proclamation of Gov. Mike Parson. I want to publicly thank our members of the Board for their service to our great community. Board members are:

  • President Ruth Johnson
  • Vice President Deanna Olson
  • Carol Barnes
  • Paul Coffman
  • Billy King
  • Bill Lowe
  • Kim York

All Board members come with different backgrounds and experiences. However, they come together on the School Board with the common goal of helping students realize the mission of the Ray-Pec School District. The demand for their time is significant, and we sincerely appreciate everything the Board does to make the educational experience for students the best it can be.

One of the primary tasks of a school board is to develop a strategic plan. Our new strategic plan was adopted by the Board in May 2022. The first priority the Board set from the new strategic plan was to help recruit and retain teachers and staff by improving our compensation rates. An election issue on April 4, called Proposition RP-1, can help do that. Proposition RP-1 will ask voters to authorize the district to transfer 50 cents from the debt service tax rate to the operating tax rate. The proposed tax rate transfer will be phased in over three years, and the overall tax rate is expected to remain at its current rate. If approved, the amount produced by the tax rate transfer will be used to help recruit and retain teachers and staff. Proposition RP-1 will require a simple majority to pass.

Please vote on April 4, or use early voting opportunities if you are not going to be able to vote on April 4 because of spring break.

Thank you for entrusting your children to the Ray-Pec School District.

Mike
