Field Notes:
Where Are the Flowers?

Observations from the Living Collections Manager, Joe Verstandig

When I arrived in Newport last year, a graceful small tree with many superb qualities refused to reveal its identity to me. It stood alone, near the playground at Morton Park, not seeking any attention but certainly deserving of some. I watched on with ultimate curiosity as the lovely teardrop crown was engulfed with leaves that did not match those of which I recognized. Familiar white flower clusters followed, with the timing and morphology of Crataegus (Hawthorn), produced in high quantities. Certainly in the rose family (Rosaceae), but I was too busy and tired to search the literature for an answer. It wasn’t until sometime later when the attractive red fruits emerged that I secured my answer, witnessing the same tree at the Arnold Arboretum with developing fruit in late July...
Volunteers Needed for Arboreta
Open Hours in July
Newport is home to more accredited arboreta than any other city in the world. Each year, The Newport Tree Conservancy invites the public to a series of open tours of the arboreta in our network, but we need your help to make it happen. Five arboreta in Newport will be hosting open hours on July 20th and we are seeking volunteers to help facilitate the event.

Volunteer duties include checking in pre-registered participants, accepting donations, and managing the flow of attendees to avoid over-crowding. Volunteers will be assigned to an arboretum for 2.5 hour shifts and will receive additional information about your shift after signing up.

These common landscape trees or large shrubs generally require minor seasonal pruning to keep its branching habit open to prevent injury and reveal the beautiful bark. Joe will discuss timing, pruning technique, what and how to evaluate pruning needs, and proper tools. Attendees will be able to make their own evaluations and corresponding cuts. Tools will be provided; attendees will be permitted to bring their own tools. Please dress appropriately.

Special Thanks for Local Support
We at the Newport Tree Conservancy are thrilled and honored to be the recipient of the following funding opportunities in 2022:
Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund:
Forest Fitness Program

Through a grant from the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund at Newport Hospital, NTC will deliver programs in Newport's Health Equity Zone that encourage exploration of parks and the local area, take an in depth look at the trees around us and the science behind them, and get students active outdoors. This "Powered by Prince" program, along with NTC's other educational initiatives, educate and inspire the next generation about the benefit of trees in our community and in our lives.
Merritt Neighborhood Fund:
New Trees for Miantonomi Park

Thanks to the Aquidneck Land Trust, 25 new trees will be planted in Miantonomi Park via the Merritt Neighborhood Fund. Providing funding, with an aim towards land conservation and stewardship through community volunteerism, helps the Newport Tree Conservancy continue its mission of fostering a healthy and flourishing urban canopy for current and future generations to enjoy.
Discover Newport:

Thanks to Discover Newport for helping NTC connect with the community through our Free Tree Walk sponsorship program, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the wonder that our city-wide arboreta has to offer.
