Parsha Talk
In this week's parsha, Kedoshim, we read what R' Akiva described as the Torah's fundamental rule: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Hillel paraphrased this commandment thus: "What is hateful to you, do not do to others." While these two concepts are similar, the Torah rule appears to me to take the idea further than Hillel's notion.

Color Your World With:
ISRAEL! What an exciting day today at RMBA as we celebrate Israel's 74 years of independence! The morning started off with school-wide tefilla and Hallel, which included a baby naming by our shlichim. This was followed by an amazing Daglanut (flag-dance) performance by our middle school students. Throughout the day students are enjoying a variety of activities such as Israeli pop art, Midbar (desert) meditation, a Shuk Machane Yehuda experience, Tzahal (army) training, Israeli science experiments, Israeli cooking, Pita making in Bedouin tents, and more! Yom Huledet Sameach Medinat Yisrael! Happy Birthday Israel!

From the Desk of the STEAM Lab
This week in STEAM we learned the planting process, what a seed needs to grow, and what compost is, how to compost, and the importance of taking care of our planet! We also planted herbs for the STEAM class and will be sending home a special Mothers' Day gift.

Accreditation Update
RMBA is thrilled to announce its successful re-accreditation! Though the visit was virtual this year, the team of three Cognia educators commended RMBA on the following:

Data collection and the amount of data that we provided over several years

Curriculum, namely emphasizing that we have a process to ensure that standards are aligned to national standards and best practices

Communication—based on surveys and parent interviews, the school has ensured that the learning progress of students and information with regard to school happenings are reliably assessed, and consistently and clearly communicated
-
Board commitment to the school and its ability to establish and adhere to policies to support institutional effectiveness
-
Culture - it was evident (even through a virtual visit) that there was a love for the school by the faculty, staff, parents, and students, and a mutual respect amongst all to support the core values of the school
We are so proud of our school, the talents and commitment of our faculty and staff (who were actively involved in the re-accreditation process), the dedication of our board, the positivity of our parents, and the excitement and genuine comments of the students to ensure our continued progress as a school. A big thank you and Kol Hakavod to our re-accreditation chair Raquel Cedano, our general studies principal, who oversaw the years-long process.
RMBA will have another re-accreditation visit in six years.

High School Social Studies
This week is AP test week for our classes of AP US Government (11th–12th) and AP US History (9th–10th). We try to prepare our students to do well on the AP tests, but we go far beyond the limitations of these assessments in our own studies. In our on-level Econ class, the 11th graders are presenting a synopsis of their study of the book Capitalism and the Jews (by Jerry Z. Muller) to the seniors, which they read while the seniors were away on their Israel trip. The on-level US History class studied some of the causes and consequences of the 2008 Great Recession.

ECE3 Love
Students in Morah Sandy's ECE3 class spent the week learning about many different mitzvot, including loving our fellow Jews. The students made their own "love" pictures with the word love written on one side, and its Hebrew counterpart "ahava" on the other side.

Aleph Bet Fun
Students in Morah Tzippe's Kindergarten Judaic Studies class enjoyed playing musical chairs with a twist. All of the students had a letter from the Aleph Bet letter on their chairs, and in order to stay in the game, they had to say the letter's name. Everyone had so much fun.

Middle School Science
This week in Mr. Polanski's middle school science class 6th grade students learned about changing populations and communities. 7th grade students learned about ocean waves, tides, and currents. Students in 8th grade learned about energy and rates of chemical reactions, and about properties of ionic and covalent compounds.

Israel Pride
Students in Morah Aviva's ECE4A class have been eagerly preparing for Yom HaAztmaut by working on some amazing activities, which included an Israel map collage using different textures and materials. The class also decorated white sun hats with Israel symbols, writing the word Israel in English and in Hebrew, as well as the number 74 in honor of this special birthday celebration.

Tambourine Reflections
This week Ms. Rantz's middle school drawing explo learned about the history of tambourine art design. They then reflected on traits or situations in their lives that they wanted to improve and grow in. After envisioning the steps they would need to go through to be successful, they assigned symbols and images and designed the art in the images above.

|
Erosion
This week students in Ms. Morrison's 5th grade STEAM class built a model of a mountain with sand and tested the effects of erosion. They found the water they used in their experiment made canyons, flooding, and some crevices. Some observations were "the water made a dent in my mountain" and "the water washed away parts of mine." 5th grade did a great job thinking and being true scientists.

Tefilla B'Gan
This week 3rd grade students went out with Ms. Rantz to the special area in Gan Shalshelet for prayers. They are the first group to use this space and reflected on how inspiring it was to daven outside. "It was so inspiring to pray in a place that I know so many people worked hard to create" said Amital Sales Martinez. Another student remarked "I was able to look and see all of Hashem's creations."
