Through TriShare, the cost of an employee’s child care is shared equally among the employer, the employee, and the State of Michigan — a three-way split — with coordination being provided regionally by a TriShare facilitator hub which in northern Michigan is United Way of Northwest Michigan! >>Read More

NEVER MISS A CHANCE TO DANCE!

This event is a four-week series every Wednesday starting 4/19/2023 at 6 pm. The total cost for the dance series is $60/person. Reserve your spot and pay directly via the link below:

https://square.link/u/BOlq5GtP

or

https://herthahall.com/events

This dance class series will be taught by Nancy and Mel Kiogima. The Kiogima's started their dancing career in the late 70s when Disco was at the height of popularity. They are trained in Ballroom, Latin, Swing, and Country Two-Step and teach dance (group, private, and wedding) throughout northern Michigan. In addition, they have taught and choreographed dance with the local non-profit, Swing Shift & the Stars for the past 14 years. They are the owners of their own dance business, "Night Moves Social Dance".

The premise behind their instruction is a 6-count basic step. Depending on the tempo of the music, this can be converted to a double or single time. This dance is often the first swing dance that is introduced to people because of its simplicity, making it easy for a new dancer to learn dance basics.

Flowers, Friends & Fun to Support the Middle School Readers

Cherryland Middle School's library has been closed this school year, so the Elk Rapids District Library has helped fill the gap by providing extra services and purchasing much-needed and updated books for middle school students. The Friends of the Elk Rapids Library allocated $3,000 last fall to help the library buy those books. They raised most of the money in October, and they're ready to raise the rest this month.

"We're only $642 away from our goal," said Myra Muth, Fund Raising Co-Chair for the Friends. "We've heard nothing but good things about this cooperative project between the middle school and the library, so we want to make sure it's fully funded." >> Continue Reading

Paddle Antrim is pleased to announce they are accepting applications for their 2023 Spring Ripple Effect Mini Grant Program. This competitive grant program funds projects that protect the waterways and connect people to them. Potential projects must focus on stewardship, education, or increasing accessibility to the lakes and rivers.

Since 2015, Paddle Antrim has awarded over $30,400 to 21 projects that have made an impact on over 10 communities. To be considered for the grant program, projects must be focused on the Elk River Chain of Lakes watershed or adjacent watersheds which impact Antrim County. Eligible applicants include Michigan-based non-profit organizations or governmental entities. Past projects include the installation of a rain garden in Ellsworth, the design and installation of new interpretive panels for the Grass River Natural Area’s Nature Center, and funding towards the installation of the first universal access kayak launch on The Chain of Lakes Water Trail at Milton Township Waterfront Park. A list of completed projects funded by this Mini-Grant Program can be found at  www.paddleantrim.com/completed-projects.

"The Ripple Effect Mini Grant has supported important projects at Grass River Natural Area that have improved our educational programs and land management, supported the safety of our staff and visitors, and assisted us in reaching a broader audience in showing people the importance of the Chain of Lakes watershed,” said James Dake, Education Director at Grass River Natural Area. The Grass River Natural Area has been a recipient of several of these grants over the years.

The 2023 Spring Grant round will fund a total of $1,000 - $3,000 for eligible projects. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 1, 2023, to be considered. Final decisions are announced in June. More information can be found online at paddleantrim.com/ripple-effect-mini-grants.
