March is Women’s History Month!

To honor their commitment to Weymouth Center, preservation of the Boyd House, and dedication to the local community, we’re shining the spotlight on the Women of Weymouth for National Women’s History Month. The volunteerism of these women has been integral to the growth and success of our organization since the late 1970s. We recognize and thank them for being integral members of the Friends of Weymouth, Inc. and for devoting their time and talents to curating cultural events and activities for the Southern Pines and surrounding communities to enjoy.

The Spotlight: Women of Weymouth

Women of Weymouth’s early history began shortly after Friends of Weymouth, Inc. was incorporated in 1977. One of the first tasks on the new board’s agenda was to begin a women’s committee. The Women’s Auxiliary was formed, which would later become Women of Weymouth. In 1978, FOW set their headquarters at the Boyd House which brought the 15 women who made up the Women’s Auxiliary a flurry of new projects and tasks.

“The interesting thing is when the women’s committee got started, they helped with everything,” said current Chair of the Women of Weymouth, Bev Reynolds. “They helped set up the house. They helped with the grounds. They helped operate the Writers-in-Residence.”

This tenacity and work ethic is the legacy of Katharine Boyd that the Women of Weymouth would continue into the 21st century.

The current Chair of Women of Weymouth, Bev Reynolds, notes that “the invaluable talent and energy of our women” are behind some of Weymouth’s most anticipated annual events and activities which “not only provide Weymouth with funds but provide enjoyment and a wonderful way to involve the community and share Weymouth’s beauty with our neighbors.”

Bev and her cohorts look forward to continuing the Women of Weymouth’s legacy by planning annual events that have something for everyone. All of these events such as Ladies Wine Out, Strawberry Festival, Supper on the Grounds, and Holiday Festival in December as well as activities created and hosted by WOW are perfect for date nights, ladies’ night, and memorable excursions for families.

weymouth quote _2_.png

Members of the Women of Weymouth agree that the most special characteristic of WOW is that they are a testament to the “women that make our community such a remarkable place.”

The Women of Weymouth convene once a month to enjoy informative programs and guest speakers. Monthly Meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 9:30 am, January-May and September-November.

Shana's unique genre of ChamberSoul™ weaves jazz, roots, folk, acoustic pop, and a touch of R&B into melodies that echo in your head for days. Of her work, Shana says, “I’m intrinsically drawn to acoustic instruments because of their resonance, warmth, and intimacy. ChamberSoul brings the musicians and their audience close, and makes the music tangible, no matter how large or small the room is."

Shortly after the release of her debut CD, SHiNE in 2011, Cirque du Soleil recruiters heard an NPR interview with Shana about her ChamberSoul songwriting and performance style, they invited her to be cellist/vocalist for their show, KÀ in Las Vegas, where she performed for five years before returning to North Carolina. A sought-after collaborator, Shana performs and records with legendary jazz saxophonist/composer Bennie Maupin, jazz flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell, Grammy-nominated NuSoul collective The Foreign Exchange and countless others.

ExperieNCe Poetry for National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month, and as home to the North Carolina Poetry Society, Writers-in-Residence program, and the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, Weymouth Center is pleased to present ExperieNCe Poetry! Join the celebration on social media by engaging with us on Instagram and Facebook as we share 30 days of poems from North Carolina talent.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with us and #ExperieNCePoetry!

Facebook      Instagram

This special initiative is made possible by Weymouth Board Members Marilyn Barrett, Andie Rose, and Pat Riviere-Seel. Pat Riviere-Seel is the liaison to the NC Writers Network for Weymouth's partnership in the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame and a published poet.

Pat Riviere-Seel on the ExperieNCe Poetry project:

"The April Poetry Month poem project is a statewide initiative, the brainchild of Marilyn Barrett who had been posting a poem a day on her own Facebook page for years. When she told me about it, it seemed natural to involve the North Carolina Poetry Society membership in the selection process. The NCPS has made Weymouth Center its permanent home since 1987 and this year is celebrating its 90th year as an organization. With the pandemic, we have not been able to host meetings at Weymouth. So, Poetry Month seemed a good time to renew those ties between NCPS and Weymouth - as we at Weymouth celebrate 100 years of the Boyd house, the NCPS is celebrating 35 years at home in the Boyd house. My hope is that I will be able to showcase a cross-section of NC poets - from the well known (our living NC Poet Laureates for example) to the unpublished."
