The Art of Intentional Giving

By Whitney Sanger

HACAP and YP Co-Director of Academic Outreach

Young professionals tend to get a bad rap, lazy, self-centered, apathetic, all about me me me, and the list of adjectives goes on and on (thanks, society). But, honestly, when looking at the young professionals in our community, there are individuals cultivating a brighter world by leading the charge to change and a new way of giving, intentional giving.

You may be wondering what intentional giving is? How do we do it, and where do we start? Dive in by reading Whitney’s blog about The Art of Intentional Giving.

Why do you YP?

“I enjoy being a member of YP for the networking opportunities. As someone who works remotely, going to YP events and being involved with the group gives me an opportunity to get out of the house and be around other young professionals in a casual and positive environment. I was recently a mentor in the YP Next Up mentoring program and enjoyed being able to connect with other YP members and also the mentees from UD.”

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Trust the experts you work with when planning for the future. Without trust working with them will not have a significant difference. Make sure they specialize in what they do. Yes, you maybe can do it online, but a lot of the time, it is not done correctly or legally.

  • Josh: Best Day to start planning was yesterday, the second best time is today. Don’t wait. Start planning for your future. Do it right now.
  • Cody: Reach out to the experts - they have more knowledge of these areas than you can imagine.
  • Joe: Financial success is personalized. If a financial advisor tells you that everyone should do this one thing, find a new financial advisor.

Best Advice for a person just starting their first full-time, full benefits job:

  • Cody: “Show up, get involved, start saving in a 401k, and start saving for a down payment on a home. A little can go a long way.”
  • Joe: “Contribute to your 401k a minimum of what your company will match. Be ambitious and hungry. Take chances, network, and work hard.”
  • Josh: “Find a mentor in or out of the industry you work in. Start saving part of your salary. Really examine all of your benefits and take full advantage of all of them.

Overall/final Thoughts:

  • Joe: When we are giving clients advice on who they should go to – work with a firm; one-man shops may not have continuity; collaboration with others; picking each other brains; the key is finding a firm where there are many people with expertise in different areas.

  • Josh: Things will change; and change very quickly; be prepared to pivot; change is not scary; work with experts and you will be fine. You don’t need to know everything when working with experts.

  • Cody: If you do not own any real estate right now, invest. Real estate has generally always gone up. Do not be scared of a 5-6.5% interest rate, it pales in comparison to the 70s and 80s. 5 % is not out of line. 2% was an outlier. Buy now.
