FGSR Highlights

U of R faculty members and graduate students will have the opportunity to engage in joint research proposals and projects, student and faculty exchanges, joint and dual degree programs, joint appointments, visiting scholars and graduate programming, research and student support with the Colorado School of Mines. This research exchange will include areas such as Nuclear Science & Engineering, Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage, Sustainable Mining & Critical Minerals Technologies, Clean Water Innovation, Hydrogen & Alternative Fuel Technologies and Energy & Environmental Policy.If you are interested in the research exchange with the Colorado School of Mines, register your interest here. Graduate Student Excellence Awards

Do you know a grad student doing cutting-edge research? Who's going above and beyond to serve in the community? Is a stellar Teaching Assistant? FGSR invites you to help us recognize students across these categories each year. The deadline to nominate a student is Thursday Aug. 31.

FGSR Fall 2023 Orientation

The Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research invites you to our orientation. Get the best start possible to your new academic journey by learning about all the supports and services available to you. Meet the Dean and other staff members who can guide your start. This event will be in-person in CK 222 on Tuesday Aug. 29, 2023 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. with an online option. FGSR Workshop: Understanding Academic Integrity

Having an understanding of academic integrity at the start of your academic journey is fundamental to success in your graduate work. This workshop will familiarize you with principles you need to avoid academic misconduct and some of the common mistakes graduate students make. Dr. Chris Oriet, the Associate Dean of Planning and Programs at FGSR,will lead this session. It will follow the orientation session on Tuesday Aug. 29, 2023 in-person in CK 222 with an online option. Register to attend. Pre-GTEC

The Pre-GTEC is a half-day course offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and the Center for Teaching and Learning. It will be held on Friday Sept. 1, 2023 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. in ED 114. Please register to attend. Pre-GTEC is designed to prepare Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) for their roles and to enhance their overall graduate experience while benefiting undergraduate students' learning experiences. Upon completion, you will receive a non-credit certificate. More information can be found on the Centre for Teaching and Learning's website.

FGSR Workshop: How to have a Great Relationship with your Supervisor

The main indicator of graduate student success is a positive relationship with their supervisor. We have some great training on how to establish expectations, develop communication systems -- and on the supports available to facilitate this. Dr. Maria Velez Caicedo, the Associate Dean of Graduate Engagement & Partnerships at FGSR, will lead this session. It will be virtual via Zoom on Wednesday Sept. 6, 2023 from 12-1 p.m. Please register to attend. Registrants will receive a link to attend day-of.

Thesis submission deadlines:

Fall term PhD thesis submission deadline: Friday Oct. 27, 2023.

Fall term Master’s thesis submission deadline: Thursday Nov. 9, 2023.


Convocation:

2024 Spring (June) Convocation application deadline: Wednesday Jan. 31, 2023.

Mitacs EDGE Training

Education, Development, Growth, Engagement (EDGE) by Mitacs Training offers professional training to complement your education and enhance your research experience by providing you with skills that are in-demand from today’s workforce.

The following workshops are available:

  • Applying the principles of sound leadership and team building
  • Building your project network map
  • Framing your project in a masterful presentation
  • Incorporating reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion into your project
  • Mastering the elevator pitch
  • Project and time management
  • Refined project communication plan

Open Projects or (Request for Researchers (RFRs) service at Mitacs is dedicated to Businesses and not-for-profit organizations looking for the right researcher to support them in their innovation projects. Mitacs works with domestic and international partners to circulate your opportunity throughout our post-secondary networks to find you candidates who are the best fit and put their skills and knowledge into practice. If you find the right project, Mitacs will connect you to the company to discuss and develop the Mitacs research proposal.
