Paul Ivany
Lead Minister
We asked Paul some questions so you can get to know role at Norval United.
What is one word that describes you?
Inquisitive.
What are you reading or watching or listening to these days?
"Ethos" on Netflix is an 8-part series based in Turkey about life, relationships, inclusion, and religious tension. It's not fast-moving but it is a fascinating portrayal about how tough life can be at times and how lives are intertwined.
How long have you been connected to NUC?
I first preached at Norval United in the Fall of 1990.
What brought you to NUC?
I had attended divinity school with Lenore Beachem, spouse of Rev Walter Beachem, who was the minister at the Home-Huttonville-Norval Pastoral Charge. They needed someone to fill in on the odd Sunday. Lenore gave my name to Walter and it kind of took off from there.
What is your favourite thing about the NUC community?
The people - welcoming, caring, patient, tolerant, encouraging, supportive. I could go on and on! I loved the farming families from the beginning. They are the salt of earth. They created the foundation upon which the Norval community is built and were always so welcoming of anyone who came through the doors. I love all the people of the Norval United family.
What is your role at NUC?
I'm the Lead Minister and will be so for just under a year more.
What is one thing people would find surprising about you?
I'm a bit of a pack rat (Don't ask Elizabeth!) One of my treasures from my youth is a gum wrapper chain that I started on March 1, 1970 and is over 900 feet long. (I haven't added to it in 45 years!)
If you could be a kitchen utensil, what would you be and why?
Can I be a blender? Get lots of ingredients and mix them up well to make something unique and tasty.
What is your favourite thing to talk about?
Other people's stories. Having been at Norval for so long, having done so many baptisms, weddings and funerals, having visited so many people, I just love hearing people's stories. There are so many interesting, moving, inspiring stories out there. What a gift to get to hear them and be part of them.
