Day after Daylight Savings

by Margaret Hasse

Blue numbers on my bedside clock

tell I forgot to change the hour.

This sets routines on haywire.

Like a domestic goat staked

to its circle of earth.

I don’t do well untethered.

I have no hunger for early dinner,

become confused by the sound

of children who seem out

too late for a school night.

They’ve found an extra helping

of daylight to romp on new grass

and can’t contain themselves,

strip off jackets, scatter

like a rag of ponies.

Whatever time says,

their joy insists

on springing forward.

Can You Help with Our Spring Fundraising Auction?

Plans are moving forward for a virtual auction in late Apr. This annual event raises funds for TCS programs like Model United Nations, the theater program and mini-grants. Auction co-chairs, Lina and Paul, are looking for additional volunteers to help procure auction items, build the auction website, and even be an auctioneer. If you’re ready, willing and able, email linarosetrujillo@gmail.com or paulchiocco@gmail.com. Be on the lookout for more details on the event soon!

Please Keep Masking Through Apr 3

Although the SPS mask mandate ends Mar 14, masks are still required in the Armory building and TCS until Apr 3. Please ask your students to continue masking for another few weeks until masks become optional.

Running Start Information Sessions

Running Start is a dual credit academic program for 11th and 12th grade high school students. Running Start students and their families do not pay tuition for Running Start courses, but they may need to pay college fees and buy their books, as well as provide their transportation. Students receive both high school and college credit for these classes which can accelerate their progress through completing specific credit requirements for high school graduation and course requirements for a technical certification or Associate’s Degree.

Running start is a good option for students who want an extra challenge or to work at an accelerated pace, or who want more course options.

The Center School will provide 2 introductory Running Start sessions:

11th Grade Session:

Thu, Mar 31, 2022

3-3:45 pm

Room 365 (Ms. Carroll)

10th Grade Session:

Fri, April 1, 2022

3-3:45 pm

Room 460 (Mr. Colin)

Students who want to attend should check in with their MASH teacher and then go to the workshop.

Please visit The Center School website for more information on Running Start.

If you would like a parent or student perspective on Running Start, please reach out to the CSCA board and we'll put you in touch with a TCS Running Start family.

Seattle Skills Center 2022/23 Application Open

All school-year Skills Center programs meet the requirements for the CTE Graduation Pathway, and several of our courses prepare for, and can lead directly to, classes at Seattle Colleges, where students can use the Seattle Promise Scholarship to take up to two years of classes for free. Learn more about the Seattle Promise Scholarship.

Each class requires 3 periods per day in a typical 6 period high school schedule (periods 1-3 for morning classes, and periods 4-6 for afternoon classes). Talk with your school counselor to make sure it will work with your schedule. Regardless of which high school you attend, you can take any Skills Center class.

Watch a video about the Seattle Skills Center here.

See our webpage for full course descriptions and the easy, required online application. Students can get transportation (usually a taxi, van, or school bus) to and from their Skills Center class.

UW Summer Nurse Camp

Every year we offer local high school students the opportunity to participate in our free Nurse Camp at Seattle Children’s. The goal of the program is to provide high school students with a background that is historically underrepresented in nursing an opportunity to engage in learning activities at Seattle Children’s that introduce them to nursing career pathways.

During this five-day camp, students will gain insight into the world of pediatric nursing by participating in clinical observation sessions. In these sessions, students will shadow nurses in a clinical environment and observe as they provide patient care and interact with patients and families. (Students will not provide patient care.)

Students will also work through interactive hands-on skills labs to learn and practice various nursing skills on models. In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage with an educational panel to ask questions and discuss nursing as a career path.

Read more and apply.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
