April is Volunteer Appreciation Month

Beach Cities Health District loves our volunteers! April is Volunteer Appreciation month and we are taking this opportunity to celebrate our volunteers' accomplishments over the last year that have helped make BCHD programs stronger and more impactful. Their commitment to helping our neighbors live healthier, longer and more productive lives makes our community great. Without their help, we would not be able to touch as many lives as we do. Tune in to our social media channels April 16 - 22 as we celebrate their incredible efforts.

Volunteer Impact

During the past fiscal year, we have brought back some favorite programs with the help of our devoted volunteers. Here are just a few accomplishments to celebrate:

  • Our Conversation Companion and Errand Volunteer roster is re-built, and Older Adult Program volunteers have made 794 visits and 1,112 calls to 66 clients in the last year.
  • The greater community was invited back to help with the Holiday Gift Bag program last December where 245 seniors received deliveries from 135 volunteers.
  • 1,140 nutrition and garden lessons were delivered by hundreds of parent docents in Redondo Beach elementary schools as part of the LiveWell Kids program.
  • Beach Cities Volunteer Day in August, supporting the LiveWell Kids Garden program at eight Redondo Beach elementary schools, saw a great turnout with more than 100 volunteers and 10 organizations assisting.
  • Restaurant Ambassadors supported the 100+ Blue Zones Project Approved restaurants and reached out to potential restaurants
  • Center for Health & Fitness volunteers have come back to support our growing membership of 2,000+ CHF members.
  • 29 Campus Greeters are in action again, greeting visitors with a warm welcome at the 514 building.
  • Our much-anticipated allcove Beach Cities center celebrated their grand opening in January with covefest, where 50 volunteers helped run the booths, direct parking and give facility tours.
  • A 15-person allcove Youth Advisory Group was assembled to help allcove Beach Cities.

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please take a look at our volunteer application which shows available opportunities. Our volunteer team reviews all applications and will reach out to you when opportunities which match your interests become available.

The Masking Guidelines HOO became effective at 12:01 a.m on Monday, April 03, 2023.

This order requires employees who work in Healthcare Facilities and with individuals who are at high-risk to wear a well-fitting mask when providing care to or working in-person with patients, clients, and residents and when in patient care areas in healthcare and direct care settings. A well-fitting mask is not required to be worn when no patient, client, or resident is present.

The Reporting Requirement HOO became effective at 12:01 a.m on Monday, April 03, 2023.

It continues the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) requirements for the reporting of COVID-19 test results, hospitalizations, deaths, and clusters to LACDPH to allow for ongoing public health surveillance.

Fewer Units & Less Construction Time

Residential Care for the Elderly units dropped from 420 to 217 and active construction time is shortened from nine years to five years in two phases instead of three.

Acres of Open Space

The revitalization will replace acres of asphalt with approximately two soccer fields of open, programmable open space. The campus will also feature a demonstration garden for our LiveWell Kids trainings and a walking path for visitors.

For our Community

The new campus will be home to BCHD’s 40+ programs and services, including allcove Beach Cities. Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and Residential Care for the Elderly (RCFE) will also anchor BCHD's new campus.

Mosquito-Borne Viruses

Mosquito bites can be more than just annoying and itchy. Some types of mosquitoes, both in the United States and around the world, spread viruses that can cause disease.

Mosquitoes bite during the day and night, live indoors and outdoors, and search for warm places as temperatures begin to drop. Some will hibernate in enclosed spaces, garages, sheds, and under (or inside) homes to survive cold temperatures. In the United States, mosquito season starts in the spring and summer, continuing through fall. The peak mosquito season lasts from June to November in Los Angeles County.
