Share the road with farm equipment

farm equipment

Our local farmers are on the go! There may be more slow-moving farm equipment on county roads. Share the road so our farmers can move farm equipment safely.

If farm equipment is travelling on the road at 25 mph or less, it must have an orange, triangular slow-moving vehicle sign on the back. When you see the orange sign, slow down right away. It takes just seconds at highway speed to overtake a tractor traveling at 15 mph.

You may pass farm equipment when it is safe to do so. Make sure the oncoming lane is clear of traffic and check that wide farm equipment leaves enough room to pass.

Crashes involving farm vehicles happen most often when the driver of another vehicle tries to pass while the farm equipment is turning left. Be aware that farm equipment operators may need to pull to the right to line up with a driveway on the left. Drivers may believe the farmer is moving over to let them pass. Watch for driveways and other signs the farm equipment may be turning before you try to pass.

We see up to 35 serious crashes in Oregon involving farm equipment each year. Keep our roads safe by being patient and staying aware around slow-moving farm equipment.
