A PLACE OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Testing Season Continues

Thank you for working together to ensure the integrity of our CAASPP Testing. A special thank you to our English 3 and US History teachers who created the most ideal testing location for our students. As of today, our completion rates are as follows: 99% in math, 97% in ELA, and 95% in science.

Thank you to Assistant Principal, Mr. Cazares, and Guidance Techs, Mrs. Alfonso, and Ms. Miller for all of your hard work in ensuring that no student was left behind in the testing process.

Thank you to Mrs. Appenrodt who has worked/is working diligently to make sure our students have the best testing locations for AP/IB Testing.

This year, almost 500 Sonora students are taking AP and IB Exams.

Please note that some students still owe a partial balance on their exams, and this balance needs to be paid before the exam administration.

As your students prepare for their upcoming AP and IB Exams, remind them that regardless of their score, taking an AP or IB course and exam shows colleges they're willing to challenge themselves by completing college-level coursework. There are many resources to help them prepare for exams, including AP Classroom. Many teachers are also conducting review sessions, both in and out of class, and students are working diligently to master advanced content.

All of the Sonora community plays an active role in ensuring that students are prepared for the content, and testing in an environment that will allow them to perform well on the exams. We would like to wish our students the best of luck in this testing season!

JROTC

JROTC is a leadership program that seeks to develop responsible cadet leaders of character through high-quality instruction and enrichment opportunities that enable the development of life skills. Their mission is to "motivate young people to become better citizens".   They prepare high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities that will benefit the student, community, and nation.

Under the leadership of Colonel Kevin McMahan and Sergeant Fritz Salaamann, we have enjoyed a very busy and productive year at Sonora. So far during this school year, they have conducted numerous ceremonial and competitive events for the school and community. Our activities this year include; the 4th of July community support, Veterans Day ceremonies, numerous community-based service projects, Drill and sports competitions, a military ball, and a 4-day, 3-night leadership camp with several other high schools. All of our extra-curricular activities have helped to instill confidence and develop a sense of pride and belonging to our community.

The benefits of our program are immeasurable but can be noticed in the personal progress of students like Freshman Layla Ramos. She is completing her first full year as a Leadership Education Training (LET 1) cadet. For the majority of the year, Layla was a very shy cadet that resisted invitations to get more involved. Slowly she started to grow in confidence and make new friends as she learned about civic duty and community pride. She ultimately volunteered to serve on our "Service Learning Committee" and attended our visit to the "Grace Retirement Village" in La Habra in order to deliver cards and letters from all our cadets. That day Layla was a source of light and inspiration to our community's most vulnerable. After the project, Layla immediately contacted Colonel McMahan and Sergeant Fritz Salaamann and stated that she felt amazed at what she had done and wanted to get more involved in JROTC as a young leader. The next week she signed up for the leadership camp and has been an exemplary cadet ever since. Our future of JROTC looks bright with the value of the program as evident in cadets like Layla in the program.

We just conducted our JROTC Program for Accreditation (JPA) inspection which happens once every 3 years. We were thoroughly inspected to include our logistic and administrative paperwork, cadet and instructor portfolios, cadet and instructor interviews, and a couple of professional briefings regarding our service projects from this year. Out of 100 possible points, our program scored 99.68. This is definitely a school record ( 3 years ago we scored a 95). This allows us to maintain the status of "Honor Unit with Distinction" so our cadets can continue wearing a gold star on their uniforms. Very proud of our cadets that did all the hard work.

Spring Play:

Cyrano de Bergerac

You are invited to join us for our Spring Play, Cyrano de Bergerac. We hope that you were able to enjoy the performance. Here are some reviews:

  • The comedy was superbly done. It's obvious the entire cast works well together. Mr. Brem is doing a great job! We're going to miss all the seniors leaving this year! But that also means there is more room and opportunities for new recruits this coming year. Exciting!
  • Kudos to Jeff Brem for working hard to teach, inspire, and coach this group of kids. The play is so much fun and you can tell the cast is having a blast!
  • It was a spectacular performance by our students that was a "must-see".

Thank you, Mr. Brem, and to each of our actors and actresses who poured out their hearts. We appreciate you.

Raider of the Month

One of our Raiders of the Month is none other than Mrs. Margret Tyson. She is our LVN. Here are some of the things that her colleagues have to say about her:

  • "The best nurse!"
  • "Margaret is always super helpful, kind, and patient with students and parents. She deserves recognition for all of the medical situations she deals with on a daily basis and for helping the school navigate COVID situations."
  • "Goes above and beyond to help our students."
  • "She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the students, especially the Mod/Severe students. She is amazing and friendly."
  • "Margaret is consistent and patient, always ready and willing to assist our students."
  • "She is very helpful and always has a cooperative and friendly attitude."

Thank you Mrs. Tyson for all that you do for our Raider Family!!

Meet Wonnie Chung

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the artwork of one of our Freshmen, Wonnie Chung.

Her participation in the Scholastics Art and Writing competition had a tremendous result and her 2D artwork was chosen as one of the gold medal recipients. She will be heading to New York in June to receive her medal and her artwork will be exhibited in Carnegie Hall. Thinking only less than 1% of participants can achieve this level of recognition, she really did a great job. Only 2 students in our school district seem to be recognized at this national level.

Wonnie also was awarded Honorable Mention in the international art competition among more than 2700 artworks, which is called NSI art coemption.

We are so proud of you Wonnie!! Thank you for being a part of the Raider Family.

Counselors' Corner

Senior Hold List

Each year, teachers are required to provide the names of Senior students at risk of not passing (failing) a course. This Senior “Hold List" is used to closely monitor and communicate with students and families about progress and remaining graduation requirements. Sonora uses the Quarter 3 grades to create the Senior “Hold List”. Students are placed “on hold” for a course if the student received a grade of D, F, *or* the teacher commented, "in danger of failing". This means that a student who currently is passing a class with a grade of A, B, or C may be added to the Senior Hold List by their teacher by using the comment “in danger of failing” if the student still has a possibility of not passing the class. This does not mean the student will fail the course, nor does it mean that the student will not graduate. It means that there is a *possibility* that the student could still fail one or more required courses, and there is a possibility that the student cannot graduate or walk in the graduation ceremony on June 1, 2023.

Counselors will begin to compile the list and begin communicating with parents and students over the next few weeks and will continue to track and communicate concerns until graduation.

  1. ONLY Teachers can remove a student from the Hold List. Therefore, any questions regarding grades must be directed to the teacher directly.
  2. Questions regarding graduation requirements should be directed to the assigned counselor.

Raider Athletics

Swim and Dive

What a great week for Raider Swim as they defeated our cross-town rival in a clean sweep with victories in Boys Varsity, JV, and Frosh, as well as, Girls Varsity and JV. Ayanna Thompson led the Girls' Swim team in the meet and was honored at signing day this week as she will attend UC Davis in the fall.

Track and Field

Huge week for the Boys Raider track team as they finished the Freeway League Duals undefeated with victories over Troy and Fullerton this week. Alex Vielma led the distance runners and completed an amazing week signing with Cal State Fullerton! The Girls' Track team defeated Fullerton but fell short against Troy to finish the Freeway League Duals in 2nd place at 4-1. Both teams will enter Prelims and Finals with chances at League Titles. Go Raiders!

Baseball

After dropping 2 against Fullerton last week, the Raiders rebounded with a victory over Troy on Wednesday. The Raiders were led by Davin Schnakenberg who pitched a complete game shutout. Jacob Zoelle provided some timely hitting for the Raider offense and helped the team earn a tough 2-0 victory at Troy. They will host Troy on Friday, hope to see you there.

Softball

After leading most of the way against Sunny Hills, the Raiders gave up the go-ahead run in the 7th inning and fell to the 1st-place Lancers 4-3. They rebounded quickly on Thursday with an offensive explosion led by Brooke Piwowar, who homered twice including a grand slam, in the Raider 11-8 victory over Buena Park. The Raiders hope to avenge their two close losses to Fullerton and Sunny Hills as they close out Freeway League action these next two weeks.

Boys Volleyball

Raider Boys Volleyball dropped two matches this week. They played some of their best volleyball of the season against an undefeated Troy team but came up just short. Please join us in honoring the Seniors on Monday night as they take on La Habra at home at 4:30 pm. Let's finish well boys!

Boys Tennis

The Boys had one match rained out this week and fell to Fullerton in their Tuesday match. They take on La Habra, Troy, and Sunny Hills next week. We are really looking forward to the exciting matchup against LH on Monday. Hope to see you join us there at 3 pm before heading to the Boys' Volleyball match at 4:30.

Boys Golf

The Boys defeated Buena Park this week but fell to Sunny Hills. Looking forward to closing out the season well!
