CHOICE

by Jo Strausz Rosen

I recently read The Choice, Embrace the Possible, a memoir by 95-year-old Dr. Edith Eva Eger, who earned her doctorate in clinical psychology in 1978 and has treated patients for over 50 years. She’s a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and an Auschwitz Survivor. She documents her Holocaust survival and teaches us how she learned to heal. “On the surface I was doing well putting my trauma behind me and moving on.” But she acknowledges that she was still in hiding, running from the past.  “I was denying grief and trauma, minimizing and pretending, trying to please others and do things perfectly, blaming my husband for my chronic resentment and disappointment, chasing after achievement as though it could make up for all I had lost.”

FRIENDS

It’s roughly a three-minute walk from my office in the Fleischman/Blumberg Plaza residence up to the Meer residence, but the round trip can take up to an hour. It’s kind of like trying to cross the room at a crowded party. I might stop in the Fleischman lobby to play a mind jogger game for a few minutes, stop in Marvin’s bistro to say hi to our wonderful volunteers, on into the boutique to see how things are going, where I will inevitably end up chatting or helping out for a few minutes. I can usually tear through the Hechtman dining room construction pretty quickly before running into friends in the Hechtman lobby. Out the Hechtman entrance and up the hill and into the Meer lobby, where there are almost always residents gathered and I might get a question about the boutique or our upcoming fashion show or our book project. After doing my business up there, I do the whole thing in reverse and end up in my office having thoroughly enjoyed all the tumult.

It's impossible for me to imagine that not too long ago these spaces were empty and quiet, and I could have actually made the walk in three minutes. There’s so much going on. It’s such a lively place to be. I hope you’ll come in for a nosh at the café or bistro, or to pick up a gift or a new addition to your wardrobe at the boutique and consider becoming a more regular part of JSL as a volunteer in West Bloomfield or on our equally hopping Oak Park campus. There are so many options to choose from. Check out some of our open volunteer roles at https://jslmi.org/volunteer/. Or give me a call at 248-592-5062.

In the meantime, join us for some upcoming events that are open to our entire JSL family of residents, families, staff, volunteers and anyone else who wants to hang out with us!

Fall Fashion Fun

On Tuesday, August 29 at Fleischman/Hechtman Residences and Wednesday, August 30 at Meer, at 1pm, our fabulous resident models will be showing off some of the boutique’s fall fashions. Although it may be blistering outside, inside the air conditioning will be perfect for jackets and sweaters in all the season’s great colors. Come for cookies, coffee, and a first crack at shopping the boutique’s fall fashions! Every penny goes to support programs at JSL – so it’s guilt free shopping.

Golda

The Maple Theater has invited us to have a special JSL screening of Golda on Wednesday, September 6 at 2pm. Tickets will be available at the door. They are $8 and include popcorn. Golda, which features Helen Mirren as Golda Meir and Liev Schreiber as Henry Kissinger focuses on the Yom Kippur war. Outnumbered, outgunned, surrounded, isolated, and frustrated by the infighting of her cabinet, Meir races against time to save millions of lives on both sides of the conflict. We hope you’ll join us! If you have a family member at a JSL residence, this might be a nice family outing.

Shabbat Shalom.

-Your FRIEND, Beth

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

A Mother Full of Inspiration

In her selflessness and humility, it was my mother’s request to us prior to her death, that her family share little praise or mention about her after her passing. However, I wish to share with my readers some inspiration related to my mother’s life.

For close to four decades my mother taught young students how to read their daily prayers. She imbued in them a love of the sacred letters of the Hebrew alef bet.

On her last Friday on earth as she was teaching, a visitor took a photo of her in her classroom. Later while quietly meditating and mourning her loss during her shivah period, I closely examined this photo and found something striking which so personified her essence.

Featured in the photo is an open prayer book on her desk. The Hebrew words displayed on the page were part of the early morning prayer, “As long as my soul is within me, I thank You my Lord and the Lord of my ancestors…”.

Her life was epitomized by her gratefulness and her acknowledgment of all the blessings that came her way.

This is the message my mother leaves behind.

Are we on the same page as she was?

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
