Hello Mia,

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. A heavy month not only for me as I remember my sweet brother Junior who died by gun suicide 30 years ago, but also for millions of others. In America in 2020 alone, 45,979 people died by suicide. And 1.2 million others attempted suicide. Each of these people left behind countless loved ones who must cope with their loss.

And yet, we know that suicide is preventable. Whether it's by using the new 988 mental health crisis hotline, implementing laws that require mental health parity in health coverage, standard suicide prevention training for our health professionals, schools, and veteran organizations, or utilizing gun violence restraining orders which serve to keep guns out of the hands of those experiencing a mental health crisis, there's a lot that can be done to prevent suicide.

You can learn more about suicide prevention from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Mental health is an issue I'm passionate about. I will fight for a universal single-payer health care system that includes not only medical, dental, and vision, but also mental health care, reproductive services, and long-term care.

My candidacy is rooted in the idea that all people deserve to have their voice heard, that ALL people deserve a safe and livable California. And I will never stop fighting for those who are in crisis, have been forgotten, or have been left behind.

With  love,

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, there is help: Call or text 988, or chat online at 988lifeline.org.

The new 988 number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline went into effect this past July. The number has trained mental health staff to answer calls from those at risk for suicide as well as those experiencing other mental health and substance use-related emergencies. And specialized services are available for veterans, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others.
