September 1, 2022

Hello, Westview families,

Happy first of September! School is in full swing, and as this week's Westview Weekly can attest, our calendars will soon be booked up with fall activities. Please make sure to Save the Date for our annual Open House on Thursday, September 15, from 6-7 PM. This is our first Open House on campus since 2019, and we are excited to share the upcoming school year with our families. Please remember that Open House is an adults-only event. We also look forward to having Scholastic Book Fair on campus later this month. Librarian, Teresa Taeger is looking for volunteers to help with the book fair. You can find the details below.

In the next few weeks, teachers will begin assessing students. Standardized assessments help teachers determine objectives for the child to work on throughout the year and appropriate placement in the academic curricula. Early childhood and prekindergarten students are assessed using curriculum-based assessments (ECD - STAR; PreK - Learning Without Tears). Kindergarten through Middle School students are assessed using Measures of Academic Progress (MAP Testing). Individual learning goals will be developed based on these assessment results. The results will be discussed during parent conferences in November.

Looking forward,

Dr. Bevan Koch

FLY FIVE: The Social Emotional Learning Curriculum

Our new Social-Emotional Learning curriculum has made its way into the daily lessons for our students. The Fly Five Social Emotional Learning Curriculum supports our students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.

As mentioned last week, Fly Five is broken down into five social and emotional competencies known as the C.A.R.E.S. Standards. The C.A.R.E.S. acronym is comprised of the traits of cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.

This week we will share a little about the next standard - ASSERTIVENESS

Standard 1: Expresses strong emotions and opinions effectively

Standard 2: Able to seek help

Standard 3: Shows openness and honesty

Standard 4: Persists through challenging events

Standard 5: Takes the initiative to do what is right, fair, and just

Standard 6: Makes choices one feels good about later

Assertiveness is the ability to take initiative, to stand up for one’s ideas without hurting or negating others, to seek help, to persevere with a challenging task, and to recognize one’s individual self as separate from the environment or circumstances.

Message from Nurse Ana - Immunization Records

It has been great to see everyone back on campus this week.

IMMUNIZATION RECORDS

Save the Date for Alex’s 5K Run/Walk & Kids' K

Save the date for the 12th Annual Alex's 5K Run/Walk & Kids K. This year's event will take place in person on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at MacGregor Park.

Alex's 5K is a fun, family-friendly race event created as a tribute to the life of Alex Jamrich, who passed away suddenly in 2010 at the age of 17. The event not only celebrates Alex's life but also promotes autism awareness and raises funds for research and services in the Houston community.

The proceeds from Alex's 5K support three Autism-related charities: Autism Speaks,  Avondale House, and The Westview School. We are so thankful for their generosity.

For more information and to register for the event, visit the official Alex's 5K website.
