“WELCOME!"
We are so glad you are here!”

As we enter our church, as we live as members, as we experience important life-cycle events (falling in love, marrying, parenting, baptism, coming out, transitioning, etc.), words of welcome and support, understanding and love are what we all long for. This manifestation of God’s Extravagant Welcome and the justice and social witness that accompany it are the heart of what we hope to show our community and all who walk through the doors of Christ Congregational United Church of Christ.

PEACE BE WITH YOU!

August 11, 2023

Dear Congregation,

This will be my last Congregational letter for a while. As I’ve shared with you, I will be having hip replacement surgery this Tuesday and will be out recuperating for at least several weeks. And so, I am glad that this Sunday’s Gospel lesson is Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus Walks on the Water.

I appreciate being reminded that when all types of life circumstances make us fearful, when we feel we’re sinking into the depths, Jesus responds to our cry, “Lord, save me!” as he does to Peter. He reaches out his hand, catches Peter sinking in the stormy sea, and they both get safely into the boat while the wind and storm cease.

Peter begins sinking when he takes his focus off Jesus, notices the strong wind, and, as a result, becomes frightened. I can almost see Jesus shaking his head ruefully as he says to Peter, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” even as he holds him up.

I can remember a time quite a while ago when I was new pastor of a church in Ohio. I was facing another surgery then and confided in seasoned pastor in our ministerial group that I was afraid. Instead of sharing words of comfort, he said to me, “Maybe you should examine your faith.” That was not helpful!

Being afraid of that which threatens our well-being, even our very life, is only human, pastor or not. What I’ve found that helps me do better in dealing with such fear is to keep my eyes on Jesus. Sometimes, perhaps many times, our fear is worse than the reality of the event itself. Reminding ourselves that it’s okay to cry, “Lord, save me!” we can trust that Jesus will be present with us, loving us through whatever.

I look forward to being in worship with you this Sunday, whether you are present physically or on Facebook. I very much appreciate being part of such a caring congregation in the ups and downs of life!

God Bless You!

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Candy

Wildfires
No doubt, like me, you watched in horror the newscasts and read news stories as the fires spread across Maui and Hawai'i Islands. Most heartrending at this time are the images of Lahaina on fire. Due to limited phone access, we are still seeking firm information regarding people and church properties directly affected.
We do know the following limited information: Waiola Church fellowship hall burned in the fire, we do not have word on their sanctuary. We know the Campbell House and adjacent park were also in the path of the Lahaina fire. We have heard that many church members are affected by the evacuation orders, but we do not know the status of their homes at this time. On Hawai'i Island we know that access to some churches was blocked by fires. Six fatalities have been reported so far. You can check HERE for any updates.
In these times we want to be of help and assistance to our 'ohana in distress. Offerings and collections taken through your local church can be sent to the Conference Office where we will work to distribute the funds to devastated areas and those in need. Individuals may also donate directly through the Conference website.

Please join me in prayer, e pule kākou:
It came so fast God, relentlessly driven by winds and we were so vulnerable. Escaping with the clothes on our backs. Lives in tatters. Homes gone. Businesses gone. Jobs gone. Lives lost. Where do we go to even raise our prayers when our hale pule became a burnt victim to the ravages of the fire? There is so much loss, so much that one day was there and is now ashes. Comfort us in our tears and carry our heavy hearts in our time of sorrow.
Eventually Ke Akua, our energy will turn to rebuilding our homes, our businesses, our jobs, our lives. Walk with us during the long recovery that lies ahead. We will become frustrated by bureaucratic red tape and supply chain delays and price gouging. We will fume and shake our fists and we will cry even more tears. Yet, the journey will not be as overwhelming with you by our side.
Bless O God, those fighting these wildfires and those fires yet to come during this dry season. Grant wisdom and insights to our government officials—county and state—as they navigate how best to administer the government response. Lift up on wings our pastoral leaders as they give spiritual nurture to those depleted by these fires.
May we root ourselves in you God, knowing your Spirit groans with ours. Grant us succor in this time and in the days ahead. 'Amene.

David K. Popham, Conference Minister

Global Ministries offers a weekly prayer for one of our global mission partners. This week's prayer is with Zimbabwe. To read their mission moment, please click the Global Ministries IMAGE. Below is this week's prayer, united we pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the nation and people of Zimbabwe. We thank you for blessing us with a country endowed with natural resources, and we pray that you bless our leaders to use these natural resources responsibly and for the benefit of your people, particularly the poor and the marginalized. Lord, we pray for peace and unity before, during, and after the National Harmonized Elections on 23 August 2023. We pray for a spirit of love and harmony to prevail during this time of elections.

Lord, we pray for the Zimbabwe Council of Zimbabwe (ZCC), its leadership, staff, and all other organizations that promote peace and justice. We pray for all programs it is undertaking around the country, and we ask that you continue to bless all the partners around the world that are supporting the Zimbabwe Council of Churches and its programs.

We pray for the farmers who work tirelessly to produce food for their families. We also pray for the women, children, and those living in poverty due to the socio-economic and political challenges the country is facing. We pray for the lives of young people who are indulging in drug and substance abuse. We offer prayers for individuals motivated by hatred and violence so that they open their hearts to the compassion and love that comes from you.

Amen
Improving livelihoods and enhancing life with dignity for families affected by the Tropical Cyclone Ana disaster

In January 2022, Tropical Storm Ana hit Zimbabwe. The cyclone affected 12 districts, including parts of the Mutasa and the Bikita districts, resulting in severe damage and destruction of homes and loss of property and livelihoods. The ZCC, with support from Global Ministries, implemented a Disaster Recovery Program in the Mutasa district, which supported 120 households. Of those beneficiaries, forty families received small livestock, chickens, building materials, fencing, and garden seeds for setting up a community garden. The program was successful and provided the community with resources to improve the livelihoods and resilience of families to adapt and mitigate future disasters.

In the Bikita district, the ZCC, with support from Global Ministries, supported six affected households with shelter reconstruction materials consisting of cement, roofing poles, sheets, and labor for renovating and constructing a two-room house to ensure life with dignity in the aftermath of a cyclone disaster in Bikita ward 31.

Sam Mamutse, a father of 13 children, married to two wives, is one of the affected families supported. His family survived more than five months without a proper house after the cyclone, and it was the most troublesome time they faced in their lives. With limited resources, they built a small hut that was inadequate to accommodate the whole family. Other family members, including children, were sleeping at neighbors’ homes, which burdened the community.

Sam was grateful for the support and alluded, “I was facing a very big challenge in my life, but now not anymore. I am a father of 13 children. The cyclone destroyed our two-roomed house. My family had no resources to reconstruct the house. We just managed to construct a small hut. I was happy when we saw building materials offloaded at our place to build a house. A local builder who ZCC paid came to build the house. The ZCC and Global Ministries interventions directly changed my life because we slept in one room with 13 children. Today, when I see my children living well under this roof, the feeling I get cannot be explained.”
Besides the shelter support, the ZCC, with support from Global Ministries, also capacitated 87 community leaders in Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) in the same area.
The training identified disaster risks, vulnerabilities, and community capacities. The training covered topics that included hazard mapping, climate change-induced displacements, vulnerability and capacity assessment, and the development of community adaption action plans. The project also created early warning systems for the community using social media platforms such as WhatsApp groups and text messages that would be used for information dissemination to the rest of the community. The ZCC and Global Ministries disaster recovery support in Bikita restored life with dignity for cyclone-affected households. It also equipped the community to prevent future disasters.
