Parent Footprint with Dr. Dan: New Podcast Episodes on Loss, Self-Care, Creative Connection, and Mental Health
Dr. Dan Peters welcomed four new guests in the past month on Parent Footprint with Dr. Dan: Andrew Cotto, True Beauty Brooklyn, Paul Brillinger, and Dr. Shahana Alibhai. They spoke about struggling with loss, self-care, creative connections, and mental health.
Male Friendship, Depression, and Grief with Andrew Cotto
Dr. Dan meets with journalist and author Andrew Cotto to discuss the rarely covered topics of male friendship, depression, grief, and mental health.
On this important episode, Andrew and Dr. Dan have a moving discussion about bonds men share and male vulnerabilities. Dr. Dan talks to Andrew about his new book Pasta Mike, a fictionalized account about the real-life experience of losing his childhood best friend. The novella was inspired by Andrew’s poignant essay on TALKSPACE about this life-altering experience and will help all listeners struggling with loss and emotional trauma.
Self-Care is Self-Love with True Beauty Brooklyn’s Alix Shapiro and Elizabeth Taylor
On this new episode, Dr. Dan welcomes guests Alix Shapiro and Elizabeth Taylor – beauty experts, estheticians, and the hosts of the popular Exactly Right podcast True Beauty Brooklyn – to talk about their podcast, self-care, diversity, acceptance, and why we all need self-love.
Alix and Elizabeth talk to Dr. Dan about their self-care rituals and Dr. Dan challenges listeners to find small moments of self-care in their own lives every day (a walk, a bath, time with pets, taking care of your own body).
Real Connection is the Ultimate Contribution with Paul Brillinger
Dr. Dan talks to Paul Brillinger, CEO & Co-Founder of OuiSi. Their conversation about mindfulness, unplugging, social-emotional learning, creative expression, connecting and creating community is a way forward for us all.
At OuiSi, Paul and his co-founders and team believe that making real connections is the ultimate contribution, and OuiSi Games of Visual Connection is an expression of this calling. Encouraging collaboration, conversation, and curiosity, the game uses images with patterns, colors and shapes from nature and daily life. OuiSi Games of Visual Connection is for all ages.
Dr. Dan interviews Dr. Shahana Alibhai about her TEDxTalk “Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health” and her work as a family physician and mental health expert.
After Dr. Shahana became a parent struggling with postpartum anxiety and depression, she realized what the missing link was – the mind. She went on to dedicate her career to helping people “think better” and focus on mental health.
Dr. Dan and Dr. Shahana’s conversation is filled with candor, humor, and refreshing honesty – shining light on and moving the mental health conversation forward.
Licensed educational psychologist and author Amy Feldman, M.Ed., has created a simple checklist to help empower children (and their families) to recognize the physiological clues for becoming calm. This blog post is taken from her new book, When I Am Calm, a playful approach to teaching children how to identify when their feelings are starting to get out of control, along with what specific tools and strategies they can use to get themselves back to feeling calm. The book is available on Amazon or through Gifted Unlimited.
New Book! Being Twice Exceptional by Melanie Hayes, Ed.D., AMFT
Twice exceptionality (2e) is not well understood. While many parents, educators, and professionals are working to bridge the knowledge gap and help 2e children, there is still a great deal we do not know about how life turns out for those children once they grow up.
How do 2e adults deal with the complex aspects of being an adult? What are your prospects if you are brilliant, but can’t get into college? What if you fail at work because you don’t know how to fit in socially? Being Twice Exceptional, by Melanie Hayes, Ed.D., AMFT, provides first-hand stories about the experiences of 2e adults, offering compassionate coping strategies for overcoming and rethinking the tough parts. It champions radical acceptance of 2e people and celebrates their unique outlook on the world. Available for pre-order at AmazonorJessica Kingsley Publishers.
Dr. Dan Peters was a guest on the New Minds podcast with host Ben Koch, M.Ed., co-founder of NuMinds Enrichment, and Executive Director of Education Unbound. They spoke about “Parenting with a Purpose,” mindfulness, and how to increase your awareness as a parent.
“When we are not parenting with purpose, we are mostly reacting,” says Dr. Dan. “That reaction comes from who we are, our own temperament, and how we were parented. It’s a collision of these natural forces that happen in the moment without intentional thought.”
