Esophageal Disease and Loss to Follow-up are Common Among Patients Who Experience
Non-Endoscopic Resolution of Food Impaction
A number of patients who experience esophageal food impaction do not undergo endoscopy and have non-endoscopic resolution (NER) of their impaction. This retrospective study at a single tertiary care center found that patients with NER were less likely to have adequate follow-up after their event compared to those with ER. Significantly, recurrent food impaction occurred at same rates between the groups. Furthermore, almost all patients without established esophageal disease and NER who eventually did undergo endoscopy were found to have significant esophageal pathology including strictures, esophagitis, or eosinophilic esophagitis. This study highlights the importance of longitudinal follow-up and care of patients who experience food impaction and have non-endoscopic resolution.
