Dear Residents –

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, and with it, the sad reality that there does not appear to be an end in sight anytime soon. With the loss of so much life, the destruction of properties and infrastructure, and millions of people displaced from their homes, please keep the people of Ukraine in your thoughts today and every day.

By now, many of you have received a letter from the Town about Rockland Community Power, a NYS-approved Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Energy Program that provides residents with competitively priced, fixed rate electricity. The letter is confusing because it shows the O&R default rate as lower than that of the CCA rate (which will begin in April). This is because the O&R default product is a variable rate that changes every month and the rate reflected is an average of the last 12 months, when rates were seasonally lower. So, while in any given month the fixed rate may be higher than the variable amount, we are relying on industry professionals that are predicting the O&R default rate will increase, resulting in the CCA being a savings for residents.

And, so far, the experts are correct, with the O&R standard rate for January at $0.14688 per kWh and for February at $0.15925 kWh, significantly higher than the CCA fixed rate of $0.11296 kWh. While we cannot guarantee a savings, it is worth noting that during the 2-year term of the last CCA contract, the 7,500 households and small businesses that participated in it had a savings of $3,700,000 over the O&R’s rate for the same period.

Please note that if you do nothing, you will automatically be enrolled in the CCA program, with O&R continuing to deliver the electricity and to bill you. However, if you want to stay in the O&R variable rate product, you must OPT-OUT by March 20, 2023, by calling (845) 859-9099 x1 or visiting rocklandcommunitypower.com/secureform. In either case, you can always opt-in or opt-out of the CCA program at any time without any fees or charges.

Still have questions about the program? You can attend the February 27th in-person meeting at the Palisades Free Library, one of the virtual meetings (see below), or check out www.rocklandcommunitypower.com. And, if you still have questions, feel free to call my office and we will do our best to answer them.

It looks like we may be getting some cold weather this weekend. Try to stay warm and enjoy what I hope is a brief, passing stint of winter.

Regards,
