Greetings!
Road Referendum
Acorn Drive February 2022
Hawthorn Woods Still Working to Pave the Way!

In the General Primary Election on June 28, 2022, the Village of Hawthorn Woods plans to have a referendum question on the ballot with regards to funding road repair and maintenance of Village roads.

One example of a Village road in need of repair is Acorn Drive, pictured here.

The Village has been hard at work for many years identifying a sustainable, fiscally responsible solution that properly maintains Village roads moving forward. Below is a recap of some of the efforts conducted over the years towards accomplishing this goal:

  • An independent engineering study dated March 8, 2013, was performed, assessing conditions of Village roads, including costs to maintain all Village roads
  • Village staff attended twelve different Homeowner Association (HOA) annual meetings to discuss Village roads (multiple year attendance at some of the HOA meetings)
  • Public community engagement since the Fall of 2017
  • Citizen Task Force met from August 2017 through November 2017, three meetings comprised of HOA representatives, business and civic leaders, and other community members
  • Community open houses on November 2nd and 4th in 2017
  • Public Opinion Survey sent to registered voter households in the Fall of 2017
  • Letter to registered voter households, dated January 26, 2018, with a summary of the previous year’s progress and findings, including answers to the top 20 questions received by the Village
  • Telephone survey conducted by EOSullivan Consulting in 2018
  •  Community involvement sessions held on December 10th, 12th, and 15th of 2018, where Community Engagement Feedback forms were collected
  • Performed a five-year update to the engineering study, dated October 5, 2018
  • Referendum information in Village News E-Blasts in early 2020, including information on the upcoming referendum question
  •  Road referendum question in ballot on March 17, 2020
  •  Village staff continues to address resident concerns and inquiries

It is estimated that over 1,000 residents participated in this collaboration thus far! The Village intends to engage even more residents over the coming months by providing pertinent information for our residents to consider when casting a vote regarding the road referendum on June 28, 2022.
