TOY JOY 2023

The Toy Joy planning team has begun planning for this year's Toy Joy event, to be held on Saturday, November 11.

We will be sharing more details in the coming weeks, but we have scheduled the first of three donation drop-off/collection days. Our first collection will be Sunday, August 20 after worship, from 12-3pm in the Fellowship Hall. At that time, we will collect new or gently used toys, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, and books. Please make sure that all used items are clean and in very good condition, with ALL of their pieces and parts included (otherwise we cannot use them).

Be on the lookout soon for our Amazon and Walmart wish list links as we as opportunities to volunteer and support this wonderful ministry!
JAPANESE CHURCH
LUNCH & BAZAAR

Our Japanese church will be hosting a lunch and bazaar on Sunday, August 27, immediately following worship in the fellowship hall. The cost for a traditional Japanese lunch is $10, and no tickets or RSVP is required. Please make plans to join us for a delicious meal with all proceeds supporting the work of our Japanese congregation!
DOROTHY HOLLEY RECEIVES EINSTEIN FELLOWSHIP

Nineteen-year church member Dorothy Holley has been selected as a 2023-2024 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow. Each year, a nationwide search is conducted and this honor is given to sixteen K-12 educators teaching in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Along with Dorothy, the teachers selected will spend the next eleven months serving in Washington, DC, in a federal agency or U.S. Congressional office, engaged in the national STEM education arena. Please join us in celebrating alongside all who know and love Dorothy for this incredible honor!
END-OF-SUMMER DESSERT & ENTERTAINMENT

Mark your calendars and make plans to join us this Sunday, August 13, at 7pm for our end-of-summer fellowship! We'll enjoy desserts of all kinds followed by entertainment by ragtime-jazz-swing pianist, Ethan Uslan. Ethan is a three-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and has performed all over the USA and Europe. In addition to his solo work, Ethan has appeared with symphony orchestras, jazz bands, improv comedy groups, and even a clown show. His performances are filled with passion, humor, virtuosity, and a deep love for America's rich musical past. You'll hear original arrangements of New Orleans jazz, blues, stomps, Harlem stride piano, swing, Cuban rumbas, jazzed-up versions of classical masterpieces, and even a polka or two. Ethan Uslan currently lives in Charlotte, NC, where he presents his music and storytelling on his very own podcast, The Carolina Shout.

The Social Committee is organizing a pot-luck dessert buffet, and we'd love your help making this event delicious! If you can bring a dessert, please sign-up here. For questions, please email Michael. We hope your family will make plans to join us and invite a friend!
CHILDREN'S
CLOTHING DRIVE

For our churchwide August mission project, we'll be collecting children's clothing for the clothing ministry. As we approach cooler temperatures and back-to-school shopping, this is a time when we can give directly to families in our community who are in need of our support. When you're shopping or cleaning out your closets, please consider donating any children's clothing items during the month of August! Below, we have a specific list of the most needed sizes and items, but anything you are able to give is very much appreciated. All of these donations may be placed in the Lewis Lobby drawers. We are grateful for your continued support of this vital community ministry.

Children's Clothing Wish List:
• Boys & girls - sizes 2T-4T, summer & fall
• Boys & girls - sizes extra small (youth 4) - medium (youth 10/12), summer & fall
• Teen boys (adult sizing, teen style) - sizes small-large, summer & fall
• Children's shoes - sizes 6-13 (toddler), closed-toe preferred
• Children's shoes - sizes 1-3, closed-toe preferred
TEMPORARY ENTRANCE TO THE SANCTUARY

The construction work to repair the front steps of our sanctuary has begun. Since the main sanctuary doors will be inaccessible for a few weeks, you may enter through the side entrance of the sanctuary, on the corner of Salisbury & Edenton Streets (pictured here, circled in yellow). As always, the back parking lot doors and the Edenton Street doors will be open for Sunday School, and locked at 11:05am. If you are coming in for worship after 11:05am, please use the side entrance of the sanctuary. Beginning July 23, we'll have signage on the sidewalks to point folks in the right direction. We appreciate your patience as we make this necessary fix to our building! If you have any questions, please contact Wayne Hager.

HOLD DONATIONS, PLEASE!

As we prep for more repair work in the clothing ministry space, we ask that all adult clothing ministry donations be halted through August 15, as we will not have access to sorting and storage spaces due to building repairs scheduled during that time. Please note that we are accepting children's donations for our churchwide August mission project (see the article above!). Once we know a confirmed date of completion for this work, we will announce when we will begin donation collections once again. Thanks for your continued support and patience!
