Lassa Fever Situational Awareness
By Karen Stiles MT(ASCP)SMCM
Does you facilities still ask the "Travel Question?" Would you recognize a possible case? Are you prepared to collect and forward specimens to NPHL?

Nigeria has been experiencing a significant outbreak of Lassa fever cases since late 2021 (Lassa Fever - Nigeria (who.int) [who.int]). Hundreds of cases have been reported in just the last two months. Lassa fever is endemic in many other countries in Africa such as Sierra Leone, Togo, Liberia, and Benin. Recently, three cases of Lassa fever were reported by Public Health England associated with one traveler and subsequent transmission (Lassa fever – United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (who.int) [who.int]).
