What's Cool in Our Schools

Partin Elementary Hosts 3rd Annual "Mission Oviedo"

Mission Oviedo is an exciting end-of-the-year project for 4th graders at Partin Elementary. The project begins with researching the history of Oviedo in class using primary sources, news articles, and recordings. Students are actively discovering just like historians sifting through artifacts of the past.

Students are then invited to participate in “Mission Oviedo” where they go on a scavenger hunt in the community supported by several local leaders and businesses. Teachers can track student progress on an app and give them real-time feedback as they complete specific tasks at each stop.

This extremely popular event creates a memorable experience that combines education, technology, and fun in a community-centered celebration of Oviedo's rich heritage. The city council contributes keys to the city as prizes for the winners.

Markham Woods Middle School Biomechatronics Students Close Out School Year with Capstone Presentation

Biomechatronics is a program of exploration available to every student who attends Markham Woods Middle School. This program combines biology, mechanical engineering, and electronics to research and design therapeutic, assistive, and diagnostic devices that can potentially be used to compensate for or potentially replace human physiological functions.

In this program, students learn design thinking and problem-solving skills to find global solutions to problems faced every day. They also learn about computational thinking, robotics, app design, artificial intelligence, and anatomy.

In their Capstone project, students solve a scenario they are presented with. They work collaboratively to develop a 3D printed biomechatronic prototype that may range from an artificial spine or other forms of prosthetics.

We are so impressed with these amazing students and the creativity and innovation they showcased to their judging panel and the audience.

Lawton Elementary Closes Out the Year with STEM Egg Drop and Party

Lawton Elementary 5th graders had an amazing opportunity to participate in a STEM exercise of an egg drop. Students created all kinds of contraptions, packaging, and other elements to protect their egg, which was then dropped from the top of a fully extended fire engine ladder!

After the eggcellent innovative display, the students were able to enjoy a fun party which included pizza and Jeremiah's ice along with opportunities to soak the staff at a bucket station. These are the types of fun learning activities that are possible because of our amazing community business partners (Weeks Orthodontics), parents, and our local municipalities who support our schools.

Winter Springs High School Newspaper Takes Top National Honors

'The Bear Truth News,' a publication of Winter Springs High School (WSHS) has once again earned first-place recognition from the American Scholastic Press Association.

The Bear Truth News was one of only eight papers in the entire country to earn this award for schools with 1,701 to 2,500 students enrolled.

Congratulations to Dr. Vickers, and all of the newspaper students on their achievement. Special thanks to the WSHS School Advisory Council and the WSHS Yearbook staff for funding the newspaper issue that was sent to this competition.

Evans Elementary Sunrays Really Do Glow

5th grade students in Mrs. Hamel’s, Mrs. Sheldon’s, and Mrs. Velasquez’s classes had a glow day review to finish out their literacy center skills.

These innovative lessons engage our students, inspire their creativity, and encourage collaboration and fun in the learning process.

Way to go, Sunrays - we need some shades for this story!

Seminole County Public Schools district office and campus locations will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2024, in observation of Memorial Day.
