Adopt A Pet from the Lassen County

Animal Shelter – Rip and Roarke

Rip and Roarke are a handsome set of pups and they are ready to meet potential new families.

These brothers arrived at the Lassen County Animal Shelter as strays, so their background isn’t known to staff. Rip (tan and white pup) has an outgoing and confident personality and settled into shelter life swiftly. Roarke (fawn with white on chest pup) was initially frightened and unsure of the new situation he found himself in, but he warmed up to staff quickly and now greets them excitedly every morning.

They are estimated to be about 6 months old. Both are neutered, up to date on their vaccinations, and heartworm tested negative. They enjoy playing with other dogs and love getting out into the shelter’s outdoor play yard to get some exercise in.

Rip and Roarke can go to separate homes where they can further blossom into their individual selves. If interested in meeting one of these sweet boys, or other adoptable animals at the shelter, please call staff at (530) 257-9200.

Featured animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter are available for adoption on a first-come-first-serve basis. According to California law, all adoptable dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered before leaving our facility. If interested in adopting an animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Current shelter hours during the COVID-19 pandemic are Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday. You can contact the shelter at 257-9200.

LIHEAP Weather Bulletin: Fire Weather

Watch for This Afternoon and Evening

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from Monday afternoon through Monday evening.

Affected Areas include Surprise Valley, eastern Lassen County, Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, southern Washoe, western Lyon, and far southern Lassen Counties, west Humboldt Basin in Pershing County and northern Washoe County.

lassenedcsponsorblock image

Winds will be southwest at 15-25 mph with gusts of 30-40 mph. Ridgelines

could see gusts of 40-50 mph.

The humidity will drop to between 5 and 12% for 6 to 10 hours. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for

updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.

WORK PROGRESSING ON NEW RAILROAD

Bridge Construction, Ballasting and Building Going Forward on Fernley-Lassen Line

July 24, 1913

Telegraph communication between Susanville and Wadsworth will be established within a week, according to General Foreman Woods, in charge of the construction of the Fernley and Lassen railroad.

Poles are being erected by the company and three miles of wire is being strung per day. Litchfield now has telegraph service.

The work of ballasting the road has also been started.

Bridge work is also being rushed to completion, a large force of men being employed on the concrete abutments in a number of canyons, for the support of several steel bridges.

The work of excavating for the depot and freight sheds has also been started.

The stock corrals, sidings and switches have been finished at Caloretta and Leavitt. The first shipment of stock from the new yards will be made August 10.
