Florida's Latest Data on Safety, Health & Sustainability
|
|
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020,
Safety
Most workplace fatalities happened to workers who are paid a wage or salary. The remaining 19 percent of fatal injuries happened to self-employed workers. When the fatality rates are calculated, self-employed workers display a lower rate of fatality then wage and salary workers. In Florida between 2011 and 2018, there were 1.5 workplace deaths for every 100,000 self-employed workers. This is almost half the rate of wage and salary workers. Self-employed workers in Florida might be more likely to be desk workers than wage and salaried employees.
Health
Violence was the third highest event that caused workplace fatalities and accounted for 242 deaths in the private sector from 2011 to 2018. The data on violence shows that if workers are mentally unwell it can disrupt the safety of a workplace. Gun violence and drug/alcohol abuse were the top three causes of mental health or violence-related workplace fatalities.
Sustainability
Toxic chemicals have a direct effect on human health and the environment. Exposure to toxic chemicals has been linked to severe health conditions. When measuring toxic chemical releases in pounds per square mile, Florida ranks 32nd lowest (19th highest in releases) in the nation. Florida releases more toxic chemicals per square mile than the national average.
