In our unwavering commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve, our Women & Infants Center and WashU OBGYN team is excited to lead the efforts in celebrating Black Maternal Health Week 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital on April 11th- 17th!
The week-long celebration that is Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) is led nationally by the non-profit organization Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA). Our planning committee has organized a series of events highlighting BMMA’s theme: “Our Bodies Belong to Us: Restoring Black Autonomy and Joy!” . It is our vision that the week’s programming will raise awareness of the devastating truths surrounding Black maternal morbidity and mortality, as well as promote maternal health equity and advocacy, and provide a space for our teams to connect with the communities we serve in a positive way. Events planned for the week include a screening of the movie Aftershock with a panel discussion (moderated by resident, Dr. Halley Staples and featuring local doulas, a patient experience expert, and Dr. Jacqueline Turner), a birth workers reception and advocacy day, and a multidisciplinary day of service.
How you can get involved:
- Participate or Volunteer! sign up to help here.
- Help spread the word. We invite you to share and promote our week-long celebration within your professional teams and community networks.
- Join a few W&I colleagues in a Book Club: Reproductive Injustice. We will meet during BMHW to discuss. If you are interested, please contact LaShanda Jackson or Becky Sarabia, NP.
- If you are already passionate about Birth Equity, and are interested in being a champion for improving the patient experience on your unit, consider joining our ILPQC Birth Equity Initiative. We are looking for 1 front line team member from each unit/area to join our team. Please contact me if you are interested.
Participating in BMHW is a great opportunity to help strengthen our team's relationships with the community beyond our unit walls. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible!
