Literary World-Beater of 1922
by Roger Robbins
A.S.M. Hutchinson, a British writer born in India, wrote If Winter Comes, the bestselling novel of 1922. It sold over 350,000 copies, was made into plays in London, on Broadway, and in Sydney. In 1923, If Winter Comes was turned into a movie; in 1947, a second film production was released.
If Winter Comes is the story of Mark Sabre, a decent, troubled man in a small English village at the time of World War I. It is filled with humor and joy, with pain and loss. A satisfying journey back in time with a glorious, nearly forgotten story.
If Winter Comes can be obtained through inter-library loan, or downloaded for free through Amazon or from the Gutenberg Project.
