Congratulations to Frank Domino, MD for being awarded the 2021 Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching which honors one outstanding faculty member from each of the five campuses of the university. This competitive prize is presented to faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching along with exemplary dedication to students and the campus community. 
 
Congratulations also to Susan Hogan, MD who received an Educational Achievement (Star) Award during the May 5th Annual Educational Recognition Awards Ceremony for her work on the fourth year electives.

NASEM Report: Implementing High-Quality Primary Care
A new report just released by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine – Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care – puts forth an evidence-based plan with actionable objectives and recommendations for implementing high-quality primary care in the United States. The implementation plan balances national needs for scalable solutions while allowing for adaptations to meet local needs. Massachusetts Latent Tuberculosis Infection ECHO

FHCW Wednesday Cultural Rounds
The residents at FHCW host the event each Wednesday from 5 – 5:30pm. We welcome a member of the community to talk about their culture and the ways it can impact their health and the care they receive. The sessions are informal and involve a robust Q&A. The institutional goal for Health Equity for Well Child Visits are as follows:
  • Hispanics 69%
  • Blacks 64%

Tips for the week:
  • Send automated reminders using mychart, phone or text within 24 to 48 hours of visit.
  • Use notifications in your EMR and/or flag paper charts when a patient is due to schedule a well-care visit.
  • Schedule the next visit at check out.
  • Follow-up on no show appointments.
 
COVID Update
Massachusetts
Confirmed cases 697,398; Active Cases 18,476; 7-day average percent positivity 1.24%; hospitalized 438; intubated 124; ICU 74; confirmed deaths 17,330.

Facts:
  • A person can be asymptomatic and test negative and still pass the virus.
  • It can take 3-5 days after exposure to have a positive test.
 
UMass System
  • 35 inpatients across the UMass system.
  • DCU is being decommissioned.

United States
  • Confirmed cases 32,887,966; Deaths 587,684.
 
COVID Vaccine
  • Vaccines approved for emergency use in the US: Pfizer has been approved for emergency use in children ages 12-15 as of May 10, 2021.
  • Pfizer is seeking full approval of the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently all three vaccines are approved for emergency use. ( Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson and Johnson’s Janseen Vaccine) Currently, no coronavirus vaccine is fully approved by the FDA
  • CDC recommend resuming Johnson and Johnson's Janseen vaccine.
  • UMass will alert us when they are administering Johnson and Johnson's Janseen vaccine.
  • Reports suggests a rare increase risk with the Janseen vaccine for thrombosis with thrombocytopenia for women over 50 years of age.
  • State schools considering mandatory COVID vaccination.
  • Fully vaccinated: Continue to wear mask, avoid crowds, take caution in visiting those not vaccinated, and get tested if you have symptoms.
  • Public health information for those who are fully vaccinated can be located in multiple languages on the CDC website. 
Wellness Resources

The Wellness Committee would like to organize a few informal outdoor gatherings. We have all been isolated and working hard for more than one year now. Our hope is to give faculty and staff in the department a chance to connect in-person, in safe and healthy way. Please take 2 minutes to complete the attached survey. 

The Caring for the Caregiver Program provides resources such as the Caregiver Support Line (508-334-HELP) and The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which offers a variety of services and supports (including virtual peer support and wellness tips.
