The Aiken Chamber of Commerce is 105 years old and continues to thrive. Established in 1918 by business and civic leaders, the dynamic business alliance is a catalyst for business growth, the convener for leaders and influencers, and the champion for a stronger community.
In 2023, the Aiken Chamber board of directors is focusing on identifying strategic options to ensure the continued growth and success of the organization and its members.
Each month the board is taking a deeper dive into obstacles and opportunities in various areas of the community including healthcare, the Savannah River Site, manufacturing, education, city and county government as well as others.
Presentations and reports focused on employment growth, expansion, major goals and initiatives have been given by Aiken Regional Medical Centers CEO, Matt Merrifield; representatives from contractors at the Savannah River Site, Larry Ling of SRMC, Dennis Carr of SRNS and Sharon Marra of SRNL; Aiken County Public Schools Superintendent, King Laurence; Aiken City Administrator, Stuart Bedenbaugh; and Aiken County Administrator Clay Killian. Other presentations will follow in the coming months.
This process mirrors a visioning process used in 2013 when the Chamber’s Blue Ribbon Panel was created to design a blueprint to build Aiken’s future. A decade has passed, and it’s time for an update.
This time around the process is being completed by the board members rather than a panel. This allows the board members to strengthen their knowledge of and ability to advocate for the business community.
At the end of the process, the board will draw conclusions that will help develop strategic options for the future work of the Chamber. The options will be based on what is necessary for business to grow and thrive in the Aiken market.

Ground has been broken for the long-awaited Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC) facility to be built on the campus of USC Aiken. The $66 million, 60,000-square-foot facility will not only provide new laboratory, office and conference space suitable for advanced manufacturing research and development, but more importantly, it will house collaborative and research and development spaces for spinning innovative technologies into the Department of Energy and spinning them out into the commercial sector.
The Aiken Legislative Delegation, Aiken Chamber, USC Aiken, Western SC - Economic Development Partnership, and the Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization and others have advocated for funding of this game-changing economic catalyst since 2015.
Through many starts and stops through the Department of Energy, the Office of Management and Budget, and two presidential elections, the community support of the AMC has never waivered.
The AMC is expected to employ 120 high level researchers that will collaborate with industry professionals from across the world.
The level of activity at the facility will mean more people eating, shopping and spending money on goods and services in our local economy. Previously, these scientists and the support staff were all located behind the gates of the Savannah River Site making collaboration with business and industry and academia more difficult.
“There will be a tremendous boost to the local economy from this initiative, since the facility will be outside the Savannah River Site, a first for the community,” Jameson said. “Benefits will not only include the projected workforce but also include the in-direct economic benefits from national and international researchers visiting our community and the possibility of numerous conferences and seminars hosted locally.”
The facility’s location on the campus of USC Aiken will create an environment to develop the best and brightest next generation workforce to help counter attrition of nuclear chemical and materials processing experience. Having AMC on the USC Aiken campus will promote the “power of proximity,” allowing university students and researchers to interact to create future technologies.
The purpose of the AMC, to support the mission of the Savannah River National Lab, is wonderful, but the potential impact to the overall economy of the area is even greater. Already the South Carolina National Guard has plans to build its DreamPort adjacent to the AMC.
Both projects have been on the advocacy radar of the Aiken Chamber for a decade because of the potential they bring to creating an innovation district. These are not just buildings where people go to work, these buildings are powerful for what goes on inside of them as well as the changes they can bring around them.
The location of the facility was set up through a no-cost land lease agreement between the Department of Energy and the Aiken County Commission for Higher Education. North Wind Construction Services was awarded the final design, construction and commissioning of the AMC facility. Construction of the facility is expected to be completed in 2024.
“It has been a long-held dream to have a facility of this magnitude, a catalyst for innovation, built in Aiken,” said Jameson. “We celebrated when the funding was finally appropriated, we celebrated when the contract was awarded, and we are celebrating again as the shovels go in the ground. It’s certainly been a marathon and not a sprint, but it will be worth everyone’s efforts when the ribbon is finally cut in 2024.”

An elegant night of fun, excitement and surprises awaits attendees of the Aiken Chamber’s 105th Annual Gala being held at the Etherredge Center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20.
In a nod to the Chamber’s 105th year, the theme of the gala is Thriving at 105.
Members are invited to celebrate the successes and transitions of the past year with 2022 Chamber Chair Norman Dunagan, Dumpster Depot, and look to the future with 2023 Chamber Chair Jason Rabun, Enrich Wealth Partners, LLC. Entertainment for the gala will be provided by the talented singer and guitarist Alec James.
One of the highlights of the gala is the presentation of the Chamber’s prestigious annual awards.
The Man and Woman of the Year will be awarded to two individuals that demonstrate characteristics including leadership skills, community impact and involvement, are role models and mentors to others and demonstrate a commitment to a higher level of ethics in business practices.
The Small and Large Business of the Year awards recognize two Chamber members that have completed a minimum of three years in business, demonstrate exceptional customer service, are recognized as community leaders, inspire others, and exhibit vision that goes above and beyond business as usual.
The Ambassador of the Year will also be recognized for his or her volunteer contribution to the mission and vision of the Aiken Chamber.
Following the awards and entertainment, guests will adjourn to the campus lawn for sunset cocktails. The Aiken Chamber’s version of an elegant spring garden party.
