Water & Horses
We are fortunate at Reach 4A Star (R4AS) to have great volunteers who assist the staff in caring for the horses and their needs. Our watering program for the horses is an important part of their care. A horse drinks an average of 12+ gallons of water per day but often needs more on hot days or when working hard. Many of our feeders have witnessed our horse, Ester, looking as though she is consuming at least eight gallons in a moment! Mac is another one of our horses who loves his water. While being confined in his stall 90 days for an injury, Mac sometimes drank all of the water in his sixteen gallon trough daily like it was no big deal!
During the winter, a horse cannot stay hydrated from eating snow alone and a decrease in water consumption any time of year can lead to colic, which can be deadly. To ensure our horses drink an adequate amount on very cold days, we use tank heaters to keep the troughs from freezing and at a desirable temperature. During the summer months, the horses will naturally increase their water consumption due to the rise of the outside temperatures.
R4AS uses three large water troughs in the dry lot, two in the pony run and one in the mini horse corral ensuring all of our horses have access to water at all times. Another key factor we use to ensure the horses are consuming the water needed is training our volunteers to lead the horse to a trough before and after classes. It might take a few times of doing this routine with a new horse before they understand the why behind the offer.
We maintain clean water troughs at R4AS and during the summer we scrub the algae and moss out of the troughs rinsing it out thoroughly before refilling. . The nice thing about cleaning the troughs in the summer is the mud created from the old trough water is helpful for the hooves of the horses.

Social Work at Reach 4A Star
Social work promotes social change, development, cohesion and the empowerment of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. Social work practice involves the understanding of human development, behavior and the social, economic, and cultural institutions and interactions.

Social work professionals aim to improve and enhance overall well-being and help meet both basic and complex needs of people and communities. Social workers work within different populations and communities at micro (individuals and families), mezzo (groups and organizations, and macro (communities and government) levels.

At Reach 4A Star, social work brings a different view to everyday operations. Social workers put empathy, organization, communication, problem solving, and patience at the forefront. Social workers follow the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics to ensure professional conduct and ethical decisions are made that best serve the team and community.

Here at Reach 4A Star, we have incorporated social work into our community. We currently have Justice Hayes, a social work student graduating with her bachelors degree this spring, serving as our volunteer coordinator, collaborating with our team on program development, assisting in grant writing and interacting and assisting with clients and client groups.

We are very thankful to be a partner agency with United Way of Natrona County and appreciate the hard work its board and staff do year-round supporting non-profits in our area! We also recognize our fantastic community whose donations to United Way make everything possible. This year the $11,000 grant Reach 4A Star received from United Way will go toward mental health and well-being programs along with specialized education for our staff.
We are so grateful to the Wyoming Community Foundation (WYCF) for their support of the work we do. For over 30 years WYCF has connected people who care with causes that matter to build a better Wyoming. Past grants from WYCF enabled us to put in a sound system for our indoor arena and an electronic Lift system to assist riders mount horses. This year the $5000 grant we received from WYCF will go toward installation of an air conditioning unit for our office/classroom addition.
