National Updates
Nebraska senators and representatives are working in Nebraska during the August congressional recess. This is a good time to reach out to them or meet with them if possible. You can use the Autism Society of America’s Action Page to get ideas to discuss or determine who your representatives are. There is a section to find your elected officials on the right side of the page.
Advocates continue to be concerned about a budget proposal being pushed through by House Republicans which has funding levels much lower than the bipartisan agreement reached previously.
“Cuts of this magnitude will absolutely impact individuals with autism and other disabilities,” said Kim Musheno, vice president of public policy at the Autism Society of America. You can read more about this budget proposal here.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released resources on supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their aging caregivers. They provided four resources, one highlighting some state initiatives, and three others discussing how state agencies and policies can support individuals and caregivers and empower them.
