SHARE:
Welcome to the Office of University Compliance Summer Series! We will share key information, reminders, and resources periodically throughout the summer.

This week is all about The Clery Act.
The Clery Act
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (The Clery Act) is a federal law requiring all institutions of higher education who receive federal funding to disclose information about Clery crime data and safety policies on their campuses and in the surrounding communities. As an institution that receives federal funding, UConn must comply with the Clery Act.

Campus Security Authorities
The Clery Act defines Campus Security Authorities (or CSA’s) as individuals who are likely to receive reports of crimes on campus. CSA’s who receive a report of a crime must notify the Division of University Safety by filing a Campus Security Authority Reporting Form.
Designated CSA’s include:

  • individuals with campus security responsibilities, and
  • individuals with significant responsibility for student and campus activities who are likely to receive reports of a crime.
Reporting Clery Crimes
UConn’s CSA Reporting Form is available on the Clery website. Be aware, this form is NOT a method of notifying police of an emergency, dangerous situation, or other hazard. In such situations, immediately contact 9-1-1.
Crimes That Must Be Reported
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Burglary
  • Hate Crimes
  • Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Arson
  • Weapon, Drug, and Liquor Law Violations
  • Sexual Offenses including Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, and Stalking
  • Murder or Manslaughter
Resources for Students
If you engage with students in your role at UConn, you may be in a position where a student discloses that they were a victim of a Clery crime. When this occurs, it is important to:

1) Inform the student of your Clery reporting obligations.
2) Let the student know you can report the issue without providing the student's name.
3) Inform the student of their right to talk with police.
4) Notify the student of UConn's options and resources.
