It's not your imagination - temperatures across the United States are getting hotter and hott er. It's more important than ever before to keep your dog safe and cool. Remember to check the temperature of the pavement (especially blacktop) before walking your dog and if possible, walk early morning and/or late afternoon when the heat is less intense.

But what about your dog's fur coat? Is it a good idea to shave your dog to help him stay cool? It depends!

Set your dog up for success

Positive reinforcement trainers often remind their clients to "set their dog up for success."

But what does this cliche mean?

Set your dog up for success by teaching your dog new sk8lls and behaviors clearly and consistently. Increase difficulty in a fair and structured manner. And if your dog is in a really challenging situation, don't let him fail. Provide motivation and guidance to encourage him to do the right thing.

Put the retrieve back into retriever

Interested in finding a way to exercise your dog that doesn't tire you out? Playing fetch will not only accomplish this goal but will also strengthen your bond with your four-legged best friend, What a win-win scenario!

Most dogs love chasing balls (or other toys) but many canines don't do a good job of bringing the item back, resulting in games of keep-away or catch-me-if-you-can instead, This can be avoided by using back-chaining to train (or retrain) the retrieve.
