CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH

Educating and empowering the next generation of social justice advocates

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to deliver the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued two and a half years earlier. As an organization, PESA is committed to education and societal progress, so we recognize the immense importance of educating the community’s youth about this momentous occasion.

Juneteenth represents a pivotal moment in American history, symbolizing the end of slavery and the long-awaited freedom of millions of African Americans. This significant milestone marked the beginning of a new era, but it also serves as a reminder of the struggles endured and the ongoing fight for racial equality. By acknowledging and learning about Juneteenth, the youth PESA works with gain a deeper understanding of the country's complex history and its impact on our society today. Dr. Michael Johnson, PESA’s Director of Behavioral Health states, “This Juneteenth Holiday should continually remind us all that freedom is the most important piece of being American. Black people, African Americans have been a major constructor and builder of this great country even under the guise of slavery. Everywhere we look you can be sure that our ancestors had a hand in making this country what it is.”

Prioritizing education on this historical date empowers many young individuals to connect with their heritage and cultural identity. By delving into the stories and experiences of those who fought for freedom, PESA fosters a sense of pride and resilience among youth. PESA has done presentations and workshops aiming to do just that. Cultivating knowledge about Juneteenth strengthens student understanding of the African American community's contributions to the nation's progress, inspiring them to honor their roots and promote inclusivity in their own lives. Community Representative Cheyenne Clopton shares, “It is important to not just remember, but also find joy in the history and impact of Black history and culture."

Through educational presentations, PESA actively seeks to promote equality and social justice. Understanding the significance of this day enables young individuals to recognize the enduring impact of slavery and the urgent need for continued efforts to dismantle systemic racism. The hope is for them to become advocates for justice, promoting inclusivity, and actively opposing discrimination in all its forms.

Juneteenth stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, resilience, and hope. PESA aims to provide youth with the tools to understand the past, appreciate their heritage, and actively contribute to a more inclusive and just society. As an organization, PESA is committed to the betterment of our communities, and the organization firmly believes that empowering the next generation with knowledge and understanding of Juneteenth is vital to fostering a brighter future for all.
