Task Force Update

The Task Force met Sunday, July 31st. The group acknowledged that we are doing what we can reasonably do to minimize the spread of Covid in our congregation. We agreed that we would continue to follow the CDC and Sacramento County's recommendations, which we are at this time. We encourage those who are vulnerable to mask and require masks for attendees who are not vaccinated and/or boosted. Clergy will continue to mask during Worship except for their sermons.

We have multiple online Worship and Ministry opportunities for those who are especially vulnerable and unable to attend in person. Please contact the office if you have questions.
Coffee Hour

Coffee hour is in full swing and being enjoyed by many of us. This is an invitation to become an active participant in the Sunday morning gathering. There will be a sign up board in the parish hall for you to indicate which Sunday you would like to provide snacks to share. All the information you need is on that board. Thank you in advance for participating.

St. Michael's Step Work
Beginning Wednesday September 21, 2022

We will be meeting from 7pm - 8pm on Zoom on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. There are many 12 step programs that work to help people recover from addictions of many kinds: Alcohol, drugs, etc. The foundation of this step work is a relationship with a high power, honesty, humility, and an openness to seeing old things in a new way. This class will help you explore the principles of the 12 steps as a way to deepen your relationship with God and in doing so, the promise is that you will find peace, love, and joy in your life. The work is simple in theory but difficult in practice. Be warned, this is a class that will change you if you let it.

Growing More Deeply
Beginning Sunday October 9, 2022

Growing More Deeply: Learning, Experiencing, and Reflecting will be the focus of this class beginning October 9th 11:45am to 1:15pm in person*. It will run for 6 weeks, October 9, 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13. We will use practical experience to grow spiritually through reflection.

*Online participation may be available, please contact the office.

Debussy--Canope from Preludes, Book II

This past Sunday I played a Debussy Prelude for the Offertory Solo; here is another Prelude by the "father" of Impressionism, Claude Debussy (1862-1918), whose birthday falls on August 22. Although the term "Impressionism" was applied to music for the first time in conjunction with Debussy's works, he never really liked the term to describe his music. He wanted his music to create a "mood, feeling, atmosphere" rather than creating an "impression" of a particular event or picture. In any case, this prelude does indeed create a mood of Antiquity, evoking the atmosphere of ancient Egypt (a Canope is a container, with the top in the form of an animal head of the gods, for holding the remains of a mummy). The tempo marking is "Très calme et doucement triste" ("Very calm and sweetly sad"), which is how it makes me feel whenever I play or hear it.
St. Michael's Connects
St. Michael's Men’s Breakfast - This Saturday

Men's breakfast is on the first Saturday of every month at FlapJacks Diner. The group meets at 8am at the restaurant. FlapJacks Diner is on El Camino Ave. Please reply to Jim Dodds so he will have an idea on the numbers. If you have any additional questions, please contact the office.
Greeters & Acolytes Needed

We need a few more greeters and acolytes for our Sunday 10am services.

The greeters welcome all parishioners and assist in sign-in. The greeter also has the important task of taking down the name and contact info for all newcomers of St. Michael's at check in! Please contact Mary Ellen or Michelle in the office if you are interested in joining this ministry.

Acolytes assist the clergy with worship leadership during worship service. They lead processions, raise the spirit in the church with flying doves, assist in the proclamation of the Gospel, and assist the priest and deacon at the altar. There will be an Adult Acolyte Training this Sunday August 7th at 11:45am - 12:15pm following the 10am Worship Service. Please contact Sr. Tina Francesca or Michelle in the office if you are interested in joining this ministry and participating in the training.
