The Latest News and Updates from the Southeastern Delegation

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Again, welcome to a New Year….we believe this year we will be Finally and Really through with the virus pandemic. There will probably be more mutations, but such is the nature of viruses, hopefully attenuating over time. Be prepared to preach yearly Corona Virus vaccines akin to what we do with other viruses. So “Be of Good Cheer.”
The February issue has become our history issue and this year we start a New Series of the AMA Board Chairmen from the current Southeastern Delegation states. The style will be similar to the series on the AMA Presidents. Enjoy this look back in time.
As we enter our eleventh year as a Newsletter, we share some more favorite photographs. And finally, a reprinted newspaper column on Valentine’s Day for “Beyond the Stethoscope.”
Have a great year,
John Poole, MD, Chair (NJ)
Clay Hays, MD, Chair-elect (MS)
Claudette Dalton, MD, Immediate Past Chair (VA)

Will you be my Valentine??

(Reprinted from the Morning News and SCNow from February 12, 2019, with permission)
Valentine’s Day is now celebrated around the world as a day of love and romance, particularly in the English-speaking world, but also in Mexico, France, Denmark and Italy and now….now, in all countries, even in the Middle East, but sometimes with a different date. In the US, Valentine’s Day is marked by the second greatest number of greeting cards each year, about 190 million cards, not counting kids Valentines at schools and electronic cards and messages; the total is about 1 billion yearly US Valentine’s Day messages. Hallmark Cards is the leading US producer of Valentines Cards. The Retail Federation estimates that Americans who celebrate Valentine’s Day spend about $145.00 each (about 19 billion dollars) on the occasion and the English, England the home of modern Valentine’s Day, spent a staggering $3 billion on the Day in 2015 (about twice as much per person as the Americans). But nowhere is Valentine’s Day a national holiday.
How did it all start? Well, a long time ago and with historical uncertainty. Valentine (Valentinus) was a common Roman name and in the third century several monks, friars and priests were so named, and curiously several devout Valentines were martyred on the same day, February 14, 269, in Rome and elsewhere under Emperor Claudius II. At least one of them was said to have been martyred in Rome for offering single Roman soldiers a Christian marriage ceremony, but marriage was forbidden to single soldiers; furthermore, Roman soldiers were forbidden to have a Christian marriage. This St Valentine was also said to have healed by prayer the Jailer’s blind daughter and to have then sent a final message signed, “Your Valentine.” However, this St Valentine is also said to have his remains scattered around Europe including as far away from Rome as Dublin but also in Rome, Spain, Greece, France, Poland, Bulgaria, England, and other places in Italy; of course, all these places cannot realistically be the Saint’s final resting place.
