Council District 9 News

July 5, 2022

Hello Lydia,

For many of us, the world is heavy right now. For some time it has felt as if the only way to avoid devastating headlines is by avoiding the news altogether. It is definitely not my place to tell those of you who are feeling that weight to feel otherwise or how to process those feelings. I’ll share that my way of dealing with the backwards slides away from the just and peaceful world I wish to see is to look to the work of those leaders, past and present, who have made the world a better place.

Yesterday, our office celebrated Independence Day by recognizing those who’ve fought for and made America more free for more people. We continue to look to them for motivation for the intense struggle for the liberation on all people and the realization of the ideal that all people are worthy of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While there is much work to do, freedom for all is something worth fighting for and our team won’t stop.

With gratitude,

Sean

Celebrating Pride in San Diego

Did you know that Pride is celebrated nationally during the month of June, but in San Diego we celebrate in July? While the Stonewall Riots started June 28, 1969 and is commemorated across the United States in June, in San Diego we continue the celebration into the month of July!

The first San Diego LGBT Pride event and defiant march was in 1974, led by the Center for Social Services. A year later in 1975, San Diego’s first city permitted LGBT Pride celebration included a 400-person march and a rally in Balboa Park.

With most cities celebrating Pride on the same weekend in June, many LGBTQ+ organizers found it limited LGBTQ+ organizations’ ability to be in every city, grow organizations, and build political power. In 1990, the organizers of San Diego Pride made the decision to shift our City’s celebration to the month of July.

Cafeina Cafe Block Party

On Saturday June 25th, we had a great summer kick off brought to you by first-time business owner and local entrepreneur Andrew Benavides, owner of Cafeina CafĂ©.

This event was the first Tianguis (Aztec-Toltec word for market) of the summer. This event was organized by Cafeina Café with the help of community partners. This Community Block Party hosted local food vendors, musicians, and artists from San Diego. Friends, family and community gathered together to enjoy a beautiful sunny day in City Heights. This was a great opportunity for people to connect, enjoy the fun vibes, great food and a variety of unique items sold by local artists.

According to the organizer, Andrew Benavides we should be looking forward to another Cafeina Tianguis event towards the end of October just in time to celebrate “Dia de los Muertos” a long-standing tradition in our City Heights community.

Next time you find yourself near craving some coffee (or ice cream) we recommend you stop by Cafeina Café and try their Horchata Ice cream with cold brew. For more event information about Cafeina Café please visit their social media or their web page at www.cafeinacafe.com
